A White and Black list?

Howdy everyone!

I was sitting here thinking about how in this current time, with covid in full swing, should we have on this site a white and black list of online sellers ? Ebay, Instagram, FB, Websites ect. I seen the Paper Money subreddit post a white and black list of dealers in paper money and like their idea since as a community we have no one but each other to look out for us. What do you folks think about that, its just a idea.

Thanks for reading folks. Stay safe
Good idea! I’m planning my latest eBay buying spree so I’ll keep you posted with a list soon.
It's a good idea but my hope is that everyone will be extremely cautious on FB & IG. As soon as I started my IG account I had another user who sold counterfeits follow me. I wanted to quit & I was only ONE day old!(8 I used to tune in to several FB groups & the soiled rags I saw being auctioned off (& the newbie bidding wars) sickened me. It's great that SM has almost been like a healthy shot-in-the arm for the coin/paper money hobby but it's also has a dark side (ie: it's the WILD WILD WEST). Loads of misinformation & bad advice (over graded & hyped up auction items) disturbs us old conservative guys who like to do things the old tried/true way.

In general, I would caution any serious collector against using SM as "a guiding light" to collecting (or acquiring). Some of the youtube videos I've seen (on washing polymer banknotes, coins, etc) are really disturbing. Plus all sorts of misleading hype on fantasy & zero Euros! (or finding "broken ladders," soiled star & web notes, etc). Some collector's criteria aren't negotiable. Many coins/banknotes just aren't that collectible. Stick to Forums (like here on Numista, CCF or others) where you will get conservative advice from real (maybe old fashioned) but honest collectors who want to see you develop goals, acquire slowly & cautiously a fine collection. You've got lots of time, so a bit of education goes a LONG, long way.

Re: eBay
There is this BEST eBAY & BAD eBay sellers thread on NUMISTA
There is this E_commerce thread on CCF

On my site, I created a Money Market page which give tips (& what to avoid) as well as 7 eBay BIN sellers who have served me well over the past 4 years. (>scroll down to my Dec 29th entry<). Each eBay seller mentioned has a link to that seller (if you want to check out what they have but some sellers have since suspended their sales due to the pandemic). Mostly banknotes.

Hope that helps!

thanks a million i saw the Numista thread after i posted mine, but i think it would be great to do a full page of just white and black listed sellers. i have never gotten anything on IG but i follow some that seem really legit, they are mostly silver stackers but they do have a lot of nice coins from all over the world ( im a world collector ) at reasonable prices

I’ve just been followed by an account with some rather suspect coins and a few completely non-existent coins. Do you remember the name of the account? I’ll make a new thread discussing whether or not I should block them, but I probably will.

- the IG account? No I don't. I reported him to IG admin but they did not contact me whether the account was flagged or banned.

I’ve heard Instagram is useless with moderation... this all but proves it! Thread is coming up.
-There's very little moderation & crazy stuff is pushed at users all the time. It keeps users engaged (makes them money) but is it healthy? What are some of the social impacts? I saw Ron Deibert discuss how frantic/aggressive things have become on SM on last night's AGENDA with Steve Paikin "A Plan to Reclaim the Internet." Very interesting.

Insta as i recall doesnt contact you if its a matter of fraud they have a separate department in their system for that sort of thing. They only time they would reach back to you ( as far as i know ) is if it involved Hate speech, Violence, Negative images ( ie. Swastikas, terrorist propaganda), or nudity/sexual content.
Personally I would never use Insagram for buying/selling coins or banknotes. I've used FB a few times, but only with swaps, and only with users of high reputations. I like the idea of eBay sellers, and that's a jungle easy to get lost. The fakes are piling up all around you, and it's sometimes very difficult to distinguish the few authentic ones among all the counterfeits. So yes, that would be helpful.
