Hi

Personally I prefer to see "Country" names not shortened but written in full. Here is one case "City of Hann. Münden"

Yes, this is generally the case. Nevertheless, some places have their official names spelt with an abbreviation. See for example Saint Gall Abbey, but St. Gall City.

Hann. Münden seems to also be one of these exceptions, that's at least how the German National Library, VIAF, and Wikipedia record it:

I would say that no abbreviations should be allowed when used in names of a country, currency and similar. It is different story when we look at it as being a string in a text.
