I was watching an old Mannix TV show the other day and Joe said to one of his informants over the phone, " Thanks for the info. I'll send you a picture of Ulysses Grant signed by the Secretary of the Treasury." I found it a humourous reference to our hobby. Do you know of any other movie or TV references worth knowing?
Dennis the Menace A Quiet Evening (1962) Mr. Wilson's plans for a quiet evening with his coin collection go awry when he unexpectedly has to babysit Dennis, Margaret, and Seymour.
"but mostly in regards to checks"
-yes, I forgot he was mostly a con-artist & posed as a pilot, school teacher, etc.
I did find this 2007 movie: The Counterfeiters
which I think would be interesting as I've seen many of those old "White Fivers" (& 20 Pounds) that were later dubbed "Operation Bernard" (scroll down to P-335ax) & are probably the most expensive & sought out counterfeits that people collect (not me!) I have not yet seen this movie but really want to someday.
Blacklist season 5, episode 11 “Abraham Stern” covers the ultra-rare US 1943 copper cents and the 1934 US $100,000 banknotes, and involves someone who worked at the Denver mint.
(Available on Netflix)
Season 9 Episode 20 The Trouble with Trillions - Mr. Burns tells the story of how he obtained the 1 trillion dollar bill. There is obviously no 1 trillion dollar bill in the United States but its a cool story.
Season 19 Episode 20 All about Lisa - Homer and Bart start coin collecting and they complete an album of coins. I really liked this episode because I love coin collecting lol.
I am sure there are more Simpsons references about coin/note collecting but these are just the ones I thought of off the top of my head.
Quote: "jimpop"There's an episode of Brooklyn 99 where a Morgan dollar is featured. They clearly did their homework as they got the value spot on.
What a coincidence, as that episode [Ding Dong] was just on, here in the UK. In the same episode there
was a regular quarter that Terry bent with his fingers as he is so strong. https://theninenine.com/quotes/character/Sergeant+Jeffords/2/newest/
"That happens to be an 1883 Carson City silver dollar in near-mint condition complete with
commemorative case. [whistles] That's gotta be worth $138".
Bones , 1st season 9th episode:The man in the fallout shelter
"This is a holiday episode based on events happening on Christmas Eve. On December 23, Booth brings in the skeletal remains of a man found dead in a bomb shelter discovered recently...The case, meanwhile, progresses into the discovery of a love affair between the dead man, Lionel Little, who worked as a lease inspector for a company called Silver Cloud Petroleum and had a coin collection, and his black cleaning lady (Ivy Gillespie) in the late 1950s. Due to the oppressive racial climate in the US, they planned to emigrate to France. Lionel tried to sell his valuable coin collection to a shifty con artist who murdered Lionel to procure the collection (worth approximately $8000 at the time)...Bones asks Booth to look at the penny they found in Lionel’s pocket. She scanned it to find out that it was actually a bronze penny minted in 1943, unlike almost all pennies from that time that were made of zinc clad steel to conserve copper for World War II. Today, there are just 12 of them and it is worth over $100,000 dollars. Dr. Goodman enters telling them that it is time for the results."
Quote: "ZacUK" I vaguely think on Frasier it was mentioned his brother Niles had a coin collection.
Yes - in the Mother Load episode.
Niles: Simon's going to be taking care of you?
Mrs. Moon: Oh, well of course he will! I know he plays the fool sometimes, but he'd never let me down.
Niles: Well, you've made a lot of progress in a short amount of time, so I can't tell you how happy I am.
Mrs. Moon: Oh... you good for a few more hands?
Niles: Why not? Oh! I'm out of money.
Mrs. Moon: Oh, not to worry. We can play for rubs. [props up her feet]
Niles: Oh! I'll get my coin collection.
There's a NCIS episode that aired last year that have a Morgan dollar as a central part of the plot.
This was posted here at that time: https://en.numista.com/forum/topic92888.html
Just watched "Dear John" a 2010 flick where the main character has a strained relationship with his father. The plot begins with a flashback of the protagonist's tour of the Philadelphia Mint. The one connection between this US Special Forces soldier & his (autistic?) dad is their coin hobby.
There's a part in an episode of Better Call Saul where the main character and his friend play a scam on a bar patron by talking about a kennedy half-dollar, and how JFK is facing the wrong way (when it isn't). Leading them to eventually sell the 50 cent coin for just over $100.
Somewhere in Time Christopher Reeves use hypnosis to time travel back to 1912, from 1980, to meet an actress he's infatuated with. Everything is going "happily ever after" until he finds a 1979 cent in his jacket pocket. He then remembers it was all hypnosis and loses the mojo. https://printsbery.com/cards
