Is there a chance you could remove the sorting of coins by reference as one of the sorting algorithm unless you have by reference as a display option. Because if I search for a coin say 2011 in UK catalogue it mixes them all up because the reference numbers are sorted. The coins of the same title should be together so people can see them easier. Hopefully this link helps explain.
What does the link explain? Is that how you want it or how you don't want it?
I get a list of coins, sorted by denomination, and then maybe "first year", but not KM#, for example:
If you click "Display options", you can change
Order by: face value - ruling authority - date - reference
actually, the &o=v part of your url sets the sorting to "face value" and saves that setting for the user who clicks the link until he changes it back
And the given choices of sorting orders are probably something like:
* face value, date, KM#
* ruling authority, face value, date, KM#
* date, face value, KM#
* KM#
If you take the aquatics coin for instance it has 2 coins together near the top of the order:
- 50 Pence - Elizabeth II (4th portrait; Aquatics, 2nd issue)
- 50 Pence - Elizabeth II (Aquatics; Silver)
But later down the order it has:
- 50 Pence - Elizabeth II (Aquatics; Gold Proof)
- 50 Pence - Elizabeth II (4th portrait; Aquatics, 1st issue (withdrawn))
These are the same design just different metals or in this case variants of the same coin. But because there are no KM# for these later listed coins, it throws them to the bottom of the list. I don't want KM# to be used to sort the coins because in my display options i want it by FV. The KM# should not be used if sorting by FV.
When sorting by face value, how would you sort the coins having the same face value and same year?
The current logic is to sort by
country
currency
face value
date
KM number (or whatever reference comes first)
series name
commemorative event name
coin title
Perhaps the series could come before the KM number, so at least all the "London 2012" coins would come together (provided we correctly fill the field "Series", which is currently not done for all the coins). I don't know how we could have the 4 "Aquatics" coins together. Even if it's not the case here, the reference number often helps to have the coins of the same face value and year sorted in some logical order.
I am currently sorting the series for these coins so eventually they will all have the same series and commemorated event. So if series was above KM then that works for this issue, the problem of course being that in the UK catalogue we have put 4th portrait etc. on the base metal coins meaning the titles are not the same. whereas if it was the other way around that would then allow the titles to be the same.
Lets go with series and see if that bring any other issues to light?
Why is the portrait even in the title if it's not a discerning feature, I am pretty sure that these coins exist only with one version of the portrait.
I can understand it for the standard circulation issues which look the same and differ only in portrait but on all the CCs ... why?
It is a valid question and one for discussion with Radrick007 as the referee, I imagine it is to distinguish the non commemorative circulating coins and has just been carried across to all coins. If I were to offer my thoughts, I would have the name of the coin first in the title that way they are always listed together then 4th portrait or whatever if required. such as:
50 Pence - Elizabeth II (Aquatics; 4th portrait, 2nd issue)
HI Xavier, the series are now all the same for the coins we mentioned above, so when you get a chance to make those changes to the sort order that would be great.
Quote: "peterjhalford"Xavier, can I ask why Commemorative issue is not on the list to sort by?
It's actually already in the list, sorry I overlooked it. I updated my list above accordingly.

Thanks
The 4 "Aquatics" coins have the same series name and commemorated event as the other London 2012 coins, so changing the order won't help here.
Unless we have a specific example where it would help, I prefer not changing the current order, which actually works well in other cases.
