I've watched it to the end! An amusing and very interesting piece of history.
Thanks for sharing 👍
Irish should be glad Yeats won!
They have some of the most beautifully designed European coins.
Until the rise of EU.
Nice

I have the Halfcrown and Florin, along with Penny and Halfpenny of that year. Of all of them my Florin is the best.

I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.

It's not an RTE documentary. But an interesting documentary nonetheless.

I echo Yeats on the design of coins and stamps being silent ambassadors of national taste. So true.

This documentary aired on RTE T.V. back in 2016 - & can also be viewed on one of RTE's websites.

I love that comment that they were "beastly." Reminds me of my Great Aunt & all her Victorian euphemisms.

Well, the designs were politically & religiously neutral - so depicting animals that are found in Ireland seemed the right thing to do, considering that Ireland went through major upheavals in the 11 years before the Irish Coinage Design Committee was convened, & that memories of the Irish Civil War was then still pretty raw in some people's minds.
