Cape Verde or Cabo Verde is a group of islands in the Atlantic Ocean 400 km off the Senegalese coast. It was discovered by the Portuguese in 1444. The islands were uninhabited at the time of colonisation. Cape Verde has its name from Cap Vert, the western cape of Senegal where Dakar is located. The Portuguese copied this name for their newly discovered island group. For centuries it was a crosspoint for slave trade and refreshing of ships that sailed to the Far East before the Suez Canal was built. Also pirates used it as a hideout. In 1975 Cape Verde became independent.
