Just picked up my first group of coin roll boxes from the bank. Got two boxes of pennies (25$ each) and one box of nickles (100$) and plan to go through them all over the next couple days. I will post of this forum what I get after I go through them all... have any of you went through roll boxes? Find anything cool? :)

You want to try and get coin rolls people cashed in and not coins that they got from the fed, the fed also takes the good stuff out.
Taking a break from swapping for a while, but still interested in pre 1799 Spanish coins, I will make time for that!

I'm guessing that you are looking for errors?

It's not really my thing and I don't think my eyesight is up to the task but I can imagine it's quite rewarding getting sought-after coins for face value.

I do occasionally get rolls of Kennedy halves, dimes and quarters but I've never had much luck. One day maybe I will hit the jackpot.
Non illegitimis carborundum est.  Excellent advice for all coins.

Sometimes you get lucky.

Someone on here, forgot who, said that he got some $270 in silver halves cause someone cashed it in from their relative's collection. It's happened to me too; that's why I have a few UNC wheats, a bunch of 40's nickels, and some 10 wartime silver nickels just by buying a few dollars worth of nickels.

Here's some advice is that when you're looking through, don't count nickels from the 60's as old cause that's what I do and I was knee deep in nickels from the 60's, especially in '64 before the change from silver to nickel coins in '65. Unless they're UNC or the S mintage is low you probably shouldn't keep them. But if you get nickels from the 50's, keep them 'cause they aren't common at all.

I can remember my first coin roll search- it was at the Chase bank, right after WaMu merged at the corner of Westminster Mall before they renovated. In the penny roll was a 1927 Canadian penny. But I hardly ever find foreign coins in change, and if I ever do find less-common coins they're either nickels from the 40's, which I have too many of, or silver coins.

Countries that changed their currencies recently, like Brazil, European countries, or Mexico hit it hard 'cause they can't get the good stuff. Some countries like Japan don't even use rolls often even though they don't use debit or credit cards either- it's all 1000 Yen notes and 500 Yen coins.

Well the boxes are full of Canadian coin rolls so I am hoping to just find a lot of pre 1981 coins because their melt values are higher than the coin is worth, so I will probably collect them for a long time till I am an old man lol. I have only went through a couple rolls so far and the oldest 1 cent coin I have found is a 1945 penny so I will see what turns up!

I am not really good at finding error coins, unless they are obvious errors. So I will just keep anything pre 1981 :P
Well I have went through all of the rolls and found a bunch of pre 1981 coins, which is usual. The pictures below show all the coins I kept from the rolls... the best finds were a 1943 Silver USA Nickel and a roll of dimes in one of the penny boxes haha.

1965-1981 Canadian Pennies

1965-1982 Canadian Nickels

That looks like it was worthwhile. Will you be doing it again?
Yea it was fun to look through... I am taking into consideration the comment made by redsmithstudios though. I don't think the boxes were already picked through for the good coins as I found a silver coin and a roll of dimes... makes me think the boxes are just filled with the same random rolls that people drop off at the bank. I will probably just get boxes from now on when possible, it is a handy way to get rolls.
One time I saw this guy going into the bank with handfull's of rolls, quarters dimes and halves, the paper looked really old and I thought about offering to buy them off of him, but I was like 15 and kinda shy so I walked on.  I have never been able to forgive myself for that. I always imagine $1000s worth of silver and some really old stuff, who knows?  glad that you had fun and found a silver dime!

Lol redsmith.... I would be kicking myself too if I missed that chance. I would love to search through someones old collection of random coins... If I saw someone at the bank with old looking rolls I would definitely snag them now. A friends father of mine is going to sell me rolls of nickles, pennies, and quaters that he has saved up for the last 5 years. He has hundreds of dollars worth of loose change that he has just been throwing in jars... I cant wait to go through it all!

These coins were all minted at the Royal Canadian Mint in Winnipeg. I have visited the mint several times. There isn't any coins taken out from the production process. The coins are minted and all travel to the packaging. Everything minted in Winnipeg ends up in the rolls or BU sets.

Yes, I have done this many times. It is a long process, but if you are looking for brilliant uncirculated with higher grades or error coins, this is a great way to do it. The main thing is to have good magnification and lots of patience. You may have some pleasant surprises. Good Luck!
That is what i need... A good magnifying glass. I also need more knowledge of error coins and whatnot.... I only have one error coin that i know of which is a majorly mistruck penny.

I use a digital microscope/camera and project on a 24 inch monitor. It ios time consuming, but I have nothing better to do right now.
How much do those type of magnifiers go for?

About $150.00
A little out of my price range for now for a microscope. That is a very cool way to examine your coins though. Maybe one day when my collection is a lot large and worth more I will splurge for a more expensive scope.

I would reconsider. I made the price of mine back is about a month. I searched 500 rolls (10 boxes) of Canada 1-cent coins during that month. The coins were all circulated and rolled by individuals and taken to the bamk. Most of these coins probably came from store cash registers.
I found many interesting coins in these 500 rolls. The best 27 coins paid for my microscope/camera. Without the microscope/camera, I would not have found most of the coins that had value.

Nowadays, you can buy a digital microscope on E-Bay for under $30.
