Silver dollar 1804 [solved]

Was at a market stall last weekend. Draped bust American Silver dollar 1804 was available for £30. No photos.
Looked & felt like silver plus it had the distinctive ring to it. Shiny but looked a bit as if it had been given a deep scrub in the middle. Gave it a nice dual tone, sort of dark around the edges and shiny centre.
I can't remember what the edge was like.
Didn't buy it. Was reading about the 1804 silver dollar just now - extremely rare and worth a lot. Apparently the edges are always lettered or plain, never reeded.
I am keen to go back and check it out - what if it is the real thing??
Seems unlikely plus I am sure the dealer is smart and aware of the rarity.
nah man, you know the answer as well as i do.
if there is one thing to be learned from reading numista forums - ITS FAKE - is the main one.

just go on ebay and see what kinds of 1804 draped bust dollars you can get for under $100.
you will find yours and others that look better!

I agree with you.
I was easily fooled - amateur status confirmed!!
If it was any cheaper (oh the irony), I would have bought it!
Seriously a mega rarity worth in the MILLIONS of dollars and you think one shows up at a market stall for $30.

That coin must be the most faked coin in history by the Chinese fakers. Virtually every Chinese coin faking course starts with making a fake USA Half dollar.

I would go further than ignore the stall, but call them out for selling fakes and call the Police, I doubt they would honestly think such a thing was real and we need to deal out all operations of this hideous outrage from maker to pusher.
I love coins. Especially silver, gold and anything really old.

Type "Souvenir dollar replica coins" to google and you will find plenty of choice. Some have a silver gloss and are said to be sterling silver plated on brass. Most replicas are Morgan dollars, since demand is high and the reeded edge facilitates production.

NGCOIN explorer mentions this on the 1804 draped bust dollar
"One of the most famous coins ever struck is considered a part of the Draped Bust series—the 1804 dollar. While the Mint struck dollars in 1804, all were produced from leftover dies dated 1802 and 1803, and no dollars were struck with the date 1804. However, thirty years later when several presentation sets of U.S. coins were needed for diplomatic gifts, the Draped Bust design was resurrected and dated 1804, as that was the last year the dollar coin had been struck. These were the so-called “original” or Class I 1804 dollars. The Class II and Class III 1804 “restrikes” were produced in the late 1850s for prominent collectors of the day. Only 15 specimens are known of all three types.

No true proofs are known from this series but, as with the 1804 dollar, Mint officials were only too pleased to oblige collectors in later years. During the 1870s modern looking proof dollars appeared with the dates 1801, 1802 and 1803. These fantasy pieces are highly prized by collectors."
