Irsael 500 notes, 1975??

4 posts • viewed 68 times
hi, i picked up a bundle of bank notes from the 1970s to 2000 today as they were cheap and looked interesting. I do not have a reference book for banknotes.

There was 209 notes in the lot, and among them these 3 took my eye (among others).

The only sold one I could find online sold for £44 gbp, am I missing something or have I scored?!?!

Any info you can offer would be much appreciated!!

Thanks for looking at my post, James

I just did an eBay search for Israel P-42 500 Lirot and you can see for yourself (from the link) that 45 GBP falls within range of the asking prices for these banknotes ($50-$100USD). I don't collect banknotes from Israel so my knowledge is very limited why this one commands such a decent BV in UNC grades.

Keep in mind this is for UNC (uncirculated meaning pristine) and the banknotes you posted in your picture look somewhat circulated (VF-AU). There's a considerable difference (VF =$10 USD according to my SCWPM) but it's nearly impossible to assess a banknote's grade from pictures or scans. Prices on circulated pieces really depend on so many more factors & typically don't sell quite as easily. Hope this helps.

Thank you for your reply. I'm glad I was looking at the right thing on ebay. These 3 notes look like paying for the lot, which is good as the lot also included some nice African notes, fiji, samoa, new Zealand, Canada, Australia, European pre euro notes and south American notes! Not bad for 30 quid!

Not sure exactly what you got in the bundle (since condition is paramount) but from the tone of your post, it sounds as if you scored a decent bargain (especially for 209 notes). Congrats! I have often heard of stories like this on other forums where collectors pick up shoe boxes jammed packed with old/obsolete banknotes auctioned off for very little. It's a fun way to get into the hobby.

Collecting world banknotes, as a formal hobby (from a social media perspective at least) seems to be the "new kid on the block" as far as pastimes go. Especially if you compare the hobby to collecting one's own nation's coinage. Even the SCWPM is fairly new & many collectors discover that the BV (Book Values) listed can often vary widely.

One of the reasons I started Notaphylic Culture website was due to the fact that I saw many collectors post ? of what, where, which notes they should collect, etc (& after seeing Youtube videos on washing banknotes!B.
