what happens if you shoot a coin with a gun or bb gun?

When I was a kid and American coins were clad, I was a Boy Scout that when to the shooting range twice a year with my troop. My scoutmaster (adult leader of the troop) would nail coins to the targets and aim at them with a gun. These are my experiences:

Rifle - Would basically shoot straight through
BB Gun - depended on what kind, not sure why
What a load of nonsense.

Here we love coins and collect them, we are not interested in your bang bang shoot em up nonsense.
