(fr) Jean III Doukas Vatatzès ou Jean I de Nicée (règne de 1222 au 3/11/1254) est le beau-fils de Théodore Lascaris, le fondateur de la dynastie. Il continua l'œuvre de son prédécesseur et fut l'un des plus grands souverains de l'histoire byzantine. Il réussit à contenir ses compétiteurs : l'empereur de Thessalonique, le tsar des Bulgares (Asên II) et l'empire latin dont la vie ne tenait déjà plus qu'à la désunion entre ses ennemis. Épargné in extremis par le déluge mongol, Nicée tira avantage de l'affaiblissement de ses voisins. Malgré les guerres, Jean III releva l'économie du pays et Nicée connut un bien-être comme l'empire byzantin n'en avait pas eu depuis longtemps.
