Anna Amalia była członkinią rodu Brunszwik-Wolfenbuttel. W 1756 r. poślubiła Ernsta Augusta II Konstantyna, księcia Saksonii-Weimar-Eisenach, a po jego śmierci w 1758 r. została regentką ich małego syna. Była znaną kompozytorką, a w czasie pełnienia funkcji regentki zajmowała się sprawami księstwa z wdziękiem i rozwagą.
