Bohaterska decyzja oblężonych Kreteńczyków o podpaleniu beczek z prochem w klasztorze Arkadi 8 listopada 1866 r. była dramatycznym punktem kulminacyjnym powstania kreteńskiego z 1866 roku. Sto pięćdziesiąt lat później ten akt poświęcenia pozostaje świetlanym przykładem i źródłem inspiracji dla narodu greckiego.
Moneta została wyemitowana w banknotach, w jakości Proof w drewnianym pudełku z certyfikatem autentyczności oraz w jakości BU na blistrze z kartą monety.
