As well as being for circulation, the 2004 strike was issued as part of the Annual Coin Sets, in both Brilliant Uncirculated (46,032 sales) & Proof versions. As well as being issued in a 3-coin pack (14,391 sales) with the Forth Bridge £1 and the Steam Locomotive £2 it was also issued individually in a BU pack on 01/06/2004 (10,371 sales), in addition it featured in the Baby (34,371 sales) and wedding (4,214 sales) sets on 01/03/2004. The coin was also struck in silver proof, silver piedfort and gold proof.

The 2004 Roger Bannister 50p was the first UK circulating coin to feature a living person (other than the monarch).

The coin was re-issued in October 2009 as part of the 16-piece set to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the 50 pence denomination. The 2009 issue was also struck in silver proof, gold proof and gold piedfort. Issue limit: 5,000.
