The 2004 Roger Bannister 50p was the first UK circulating coin to feature a living person (other than the monarch).
The coin was released in 2004 as individual pieces as well as in the family silver set. The design was also struck in copper-nickel, silver piedfort and gold proof. Issue limit 15,000.

The coin was re-issued in October 2009 as part of the 16-piece set to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the 50 pence denomination. The 2009 issue was also struck in copper-nickel, gold proof and gold piedfort. Issue limit 5,000.

The design was used again in 2019 with the Jody Clark fifth portrait to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 50p in the Culture set.
