Comments

(en) This NCLT aluminium coin was minted by the RAM in 2006 to commemorate the 400 year anniversary of the first European discovery of Australia, it was released in a folding coincard.

In 1606, a small sleek Dutch ship called the Duyfken (Little Dove) Captained by Willem Janzsoon sailed through the Spice Islands in search of gold and trade opportunities. There was none of the coveted gold or trade opportunities, but what the crew found was even more significant - the coastline of the Gulf of Carpenteria which is the northern extremity of a huge continent they named "Groot Zuydtlandt" (Great Southland) and which the map makers soon called "Terra Australis Incognita" or "Unknown Southern Land" and which we now know as Australia. Many regard this crew as the true European "Discoverers" of Australia, and in recent years the Duyfkens involvement in Australian history has been recognised in official history books.

The (GZ) Counterstamp refers to the Original Dutch name for Australia "Groot Zuydtlandt".
