Máximo Gomez (1836-1905) był kubańskim bohaterem urodzonym na Dominikanie, który walczył przeciwko siłom hiszpańskim w pierwszej wojnie o niepodległość.
26 października 1868 r. poprowadził kubańskie oddziały przeciwko Hiszpanom, atakując ich przy użyciu maczet (długi nóż z szerokim ostrzem używany do cięcia trzciny cukrowej), ponieważ większość z nich była robotnikami wiejskimi. Użycie maczety okazało się bardzo skuteczną bronią, ze względu na jej skuteczność, a przede wszystkim dlatego, że wywołała panikę w hiszpańskich oddziałach, wizualnie znacznie większą niż miecze i przez swój dźwięk.

On October 26th., 1868 he guided Cuban troops against Spanish, and attacked using machetes (long knife with wide blade used to cut sugarcane), since most of them were country workers. The use of machete revealed to be a very effective weapon, because of his effectivity, and mainly for it caused panic in the Spanish troops, visually much bigger than swords, and by its sound.
