Talbot Saham Toney. The denominational period started with higher purity gold (after the debasement of the Wolf B) and is stylistically linked to early local period silver. Saham Toney was the first issue from Mint C, which was a small mint in the east of the region. This was a lengthy issue, with very different styles of die in a linked sequence. One obverse is like Tasciovanos's Warrior (ABC 2610) and may be the same engraver. Early coins are often overstruck on coinage from other regions. Saham Toney was followed by Early Pattern Horse B. The mint's output is characterised by the horse's Y-shaped head crossed by an elongated pellet, and later two lines of three pellets on its chest. Saham Toney produced Gisleham Glory quarter, Toney Curly unit, Dead Head unit, Triadic Trefoil half and Geometric Trefoil half.
Talbot Chronology: Gallo-Belgic E/Ingoldisthorpe - Early Local Period I (55BC-35BC) - Early Local Period II (35BC-15BC) - Denominational Period I (15BC-5) - Denominational Period II (5-25: Boar Horse B - Boar Horse C) - Denominational Period III (25-45).
Cottam and Rudd list two types:
COI 66a (Talbot Saham Toney, Type 92a) - Gisleham Glory Torc (5 known): Horse leaping, torc crescents around. Chris Rudd's 'Decorative Type’ (Chris Rudd List 160, 13 August 2018, lot 19, see CCI 11.0140).
COI 66b (ABC 1492) - Gisleham Glory Rosette (5 known): Horse standing in corn ear, ring of pellets (rosette) above. Chris Rudd's ‘J-Type’ (see Chris Rudd List 205, 15 March 2026, lot 16, CCI 06.0384).
Cottam and Rudd Chronology: Gallic War Unity (55-50BC) - Post-War Austerity (50-35BC) - Peaceful Prosperity (35BC-20) - Client-State Conformity (20-47) - Claudian Regality (43-47).
Likely inspired by Catuvellaunian coins struck in Hertfordshire - quadrate ringed-pellets from Tasciovanos staters (ABC 2550-53, 2559-68), teardrops from Tasciovanos quarters (ABC 2583-89) and the T-shaped bucrania of Tasciovanos and Andoco (ABC 2598 and ABC 2718). All ultimately derived from Gallo-Belgic G à l’ancre type staters (DT 169-170, DK 150).
