Braterstwo jest nieobecne w Deklaracji Praw Człowieka i Obywatela z 1789 roku. Po raz pierwszy pojawiło się w tekstach w listopadzie 1848 roku, a następnie w Konstytucjach z 1946 i 1958 roku.
Pojęcie to odnosi się do solidarności (na przykład pomocy społecznej) i "życia razem" (tolerancji, szacunku dla innych).
Przez długi czas braterstwo było uważane za prostą wartość moralną, w przeciwieństwie do zasad wolności i równości.
