(en) Beginning in the early 17th century, following the introduction and usage of the Spanish silver dollar, the Sultanate of Kedah began to mint its own coinage in tin, copper, silver, and gold alongside private tokens (mainly fighting cockerels composed of tin).

Pertaining to the exchange rate between the tra and silver dollar coins, Saran Singh's The Encyclopaedia of the Coins of Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei, 1400-1986, reports that as of 1850:

While the 8 ray/petal variety of tra isn't found in any catalogs, it closely resembles Singh #18 in design, inscription, and years of mintage/issuing ruler. See pg. 259 below:
