Projekt jest połączeniem dwóch głównych elementów programu Erasmus: oryginalnej inspiracji intelektualnej, samego Erasmusa, oraz alegorii jego wpływu na Europę. Pierwszy z nich jest symbolizowany przez jeden z najbardziej znanych wizerunków Erasmusa. Drugi symbolizowany jest przez wiązkę ogniw przechodzących przez monetę od latarni do innej, reprezentując liczne intelektualne i ludzkie wymiany między europejskimi studentami. Jako odniesienie do Europy, niektóre z tych połączeń tworzą inne gwiazdy, zrodzone z synergii między krajami. Liczba 35, z okazji 35. rocznicy, wyłania się z gwiazd we współczesnym stylu graficznym.
Zewnętrzny pierścień przedstawia dwanaście gwiazd flagi europejskiej.

Mapa geograficzna Europy Zachodniej obejmuje zewnętrzny pierścień i wewnętrzny rdzeń po prawej stronie monety. Napis 2 EURO jest nałożony na mapę Europy, a cyfra "2" znajduje się w otwartym polu reprezentującym wschodni Ocean Atlantycki. 12 gwiazd znajduje się po prawej stronie zewnętrznego pierścienia, z sześcioma gwiazdami na górze mapy Europy i sześcioma gwiazdami pod nią; sześć pionowych pasów przecina wewnętrzny rdzeń monety, wizualnie łącząc górne i dolne segmenty gwiazd.
