These notes bear Special Identification Markings ("war codes"), consisting of a coloured letter inside a circle as part of the underprint in the upper left and bottom right of the obverse. These were used during World War II to keep track of notes during transport from the printers in the United Kingdom in case of losses due to bombing.
Four letters appear on these notes, L (orange), M (grey), R (black) and E (purple).

The Irish Legal Tender ‘Lady Lavery’ banknotes, also referred to as Series A notes, circulated in the Irish Free State and Republic of Ireland from 1928 to 1977.

There were seven signature varieties for most denominations of the series.
The 10 Shilling denomination was discontinued in 1968 ahead of decimalisation in 1971, and had only four signature varieties.
