Żeton ten upamiętnia utworzenie Compagnie française pour le commerce des Indes orientales, lepiej znanej jako Kompania Wschodnioindyjska, przez Colberta w dniu 27 sierpnia 1664 r., w następstwie deklaracji króla i listów patentowych zarejestrowanych w paryskim parlamencie. Wcześniej Francuska Kompania Wschodnioindyjska została założona w 1604 roku, za czasów Henryka IV, przez kupców z Saint-Malo. Zreorganizowana w 1642 roku przez Richelieu, została ponownie założona przez Colberta w 1664 roku. Jej siedziba znajdowała się w Lorient. W Indiach założyła Pondicherry w 1674 roku i Chandernagor w 1688 roku.
