Issue individually (sales unknown; 2,500 issue limit) as well as in a 3-coin set with the gold sovereign and half sovereign (sales unknown; issue limit unknown) and 4-coin set with five sovereign, full sovereign, and half sovereign, and usually a Royal Mint medallion. The coin was issued to commemorate the centenary of Marconi's first successful transatlantic wireless transmission.

This £2 coin is unusual in that, for the first time in the Royal Mint’s history, the design was subject to public consultation, with more than 13,000 members of the public making their views known on three short-listed designs. The reverse mirrors the first radio signal - radio waves and can be seen both in the centre and in the outer ring, while a spark of electricity, linking the zeros of the date, represents the generation of the signal.
The Marconi coin received recognition from the International Coin of the Year competition for being one of the most technically advanced coins in 2001. Although it did not win first place, it was noted due to its design and bimetallic composition, which celebrated major historical technological progress. However, after the coin was issued, there was a poor demand for the £2 Marconi range due to a lack of interest in thematic coins by the Collector Coin business.
The coin was struck in copper-nickel, silver proof, reverse frosted silver proof and silver piedfort.
