Moneta przedstawia podpisanie traktatu rzymskiego przez sześć państw założycielskich Unii Europejskiej na tle przypominającym bruk (zaprojektowany przez Michała Anioła) Piazza del Campidoglio w Rzymie, gdzie 25 marca 1957 roku miało miejsce podpisanie traktatu. Napisy "Traktat Rzymski 50 lat", "EUROPA" i "REPUBLIKA WŁOSKA" są w języku włoskim. Na zewnętrznym otoku monety znajduje się dwanaście pięcioramiennych gwiazd Unii Europejskiej.
