Abbasid/islamic state coin, possibly counterfeit

8 posts
Hey guys, I'm back with another coin I can't identify on my own. Here is a coin that looks like a reproduction/counterfeit coin from the Abbasid caliphate era. Anyone knows something about these coins or could you give me your opinion? Thank you so much for your time and help!

3.82g/~23mm

It looks authentic to me.

It was struck in Madinat al-Salam (Baghdad's name in 'Abbasid times).

The year seems to be 187 AH. I am just not sure of the first digit (which in Arabic is the 7, or whatever else that is). So, for sure, it was struck in the 180s. It could also be 189 because the final character seems to be a ع.

All this information is on the second picture, in the outside, circular legend:

بسم الله ضرب هذا الدرهم بمدينة السلام بسنة

followed by the date which is spelled out.

Thank you very much, Camerinvs! I thought it was maybe a re-strike as it doesn't look (or feel) silver to me. Also, do you know if this coin is in the numista catalogue? I looked for it, but since I don't read arabic it is difficult to identify which one it is. Once again, many many thanks!
I won't have time right now to go into the details of it, but may be this one?

The main problem is that yours seems too heavy. Are you sure of the weight?

Yes, I reweighed it, 3.8g. I am having doubts about its authenticity.
one of the most usual Abbasid dirhams, - no reason to counterfeit it in our times. maybe contemporary counterfeit, but doesnot looks such.
for me its quite normal coin.
just look in zeno.ru same coins.

best

Hi to all,
I agree with your opinions
It looks like an authentic.. But
only doubt could be the weight, even if we have found Dirhams weighing between 3 and 3.5 gr .. This actually seems to be a bit high as a weight..This weight is usually reached with donative type Dirhams.
Thank you very much for all your answers. I too have some doubts, due to the patina and general appearance of the metal. However, I think I will register this as a genuine coin, keeping an eye out for an expert who might assess it in person. I don't know of replicas of these coins, although I suppose they make copies of everything these days.
