Searched the topic and read several articles and forums. There was no definite yes or no. The only conclusion I could come away with, is that it is personal preference. Although, self-adhesive flips have increased in quality. That said, there were more people using the Supersafe brand that were using the self-adhesive flips ..

Do not argue with ignorant people .. !! They will drag you down to their level, then pulverize you with experience ...
I have used the ones made by Leuchtturm for 4 years now, and I haven't had any problems with them. If the self-adhesive were to do some damage to the coins, it would probably have shown up by now, so I am quite happy with them.
I don't use 2x2s, but I'd certainly prefer using the self-adhesive ones to the ones that need stapling, for aesthetic, practical, and convenience reasons.
Quote: "WHATEVERR"How do you store your coins Cass?
In these white plastic trays, separated into British Empire, Western Europe, the rest of Europe and the rest of the world (colonies I store next to their coloniser). Here's a shot of the Western Europe tray:
The dividers are cardboard that I cut out of moving boxes and the bottoms of shopping bags; I have them lined up in chronological order. Most of the clear holders I use are hard plastic (pictured), but a few less valuable, modern coins are still in the (bad) old vinyl flips, which I've been phasing out since last year.
Sometimes if the coins aren't too valuable or too pristine, I store a few of them, usually a set or related, in one flip; the hard plastic flips I ask to get for free, from dealers after purchases :
I use them and they are exactly what I was looking for.
For the black color the only negative point I have is that the external material is kind of glossy and with my oily skin I always leave my finger prints everywhere, but if you dont have this problem, or use a glove, or another piece of paper you will not have this problem... or just go with the white color ones.
@CassTaylor Thanks, your collection looks sweet, very jealous. Those mylar flips are quite expensive in the UK, not sure if that is the same everywhere. About £30 for 100 on Ebay. Might be best for my more expensive coins. They don't look very air-tight though, isn't that a problem?
I don't want in 10 years to find all my common coins corroded by adhesive or something. Common or not, i still want to preserve them :)
@JustForFun:
Never seen the black flips before, i quite like to write on mine so i'd go with the white i think. Nice Syrian collection, they have some awesome designs.
In the UK they are expensive (generally), which is why I usually asked for 10-20 every time I made a purchase. They accumulate quicker than you think that way. I also gave top priority for my more expensive/pristine coins to move into them first.
And no, they're not 100% airtight, but unless you buy specifically airtight capsules, neither are 2x2s, self-adhesive or not, or really just about any standard form of storage. What I usually do is I cut mylar flips in half (also multiples the amount of mylar flips you can use!), and I fold the material on top down over the opening of the flip's half, creating a "lid".
That usually shields the flips' occupant(s) from most of the elements; I once spilled my coffee on a tray, and I panicked; but once I'd dried everything off, not even a drop had gotten inside the folded flips.
I did use this kind of flips, even the black one, but I gave up cause:
- they're expensive, here in Brazil something like 3 or 4 for a US$.
- the black ones scratches, specially when put in boxes like I do.
- they don't permit to access the coins without destroying them.
I tried to use this plastic flips CassTaylor uses, but they are made of PVC ( in Numismatic, "Please aVoid in Coins")
So I use some ziplock plastic bags, 1,5" x 1,5", as they are made of polypropylene and are cheaper here, 1000 for less than 10 US$.
In future I will try to find thicker ones, to try made vacuum on them. I think I saw someone talking about this in this forum and liked the idea.
Besides the idea of emulating an air tight, I think they can stand up when put in a box.
Lets adopt the KISS philosophy, "Keep It Simple Sucker"

I know what you're referring to; the older ones made of vinyl do indeed contain PVC and over time will result in weird green stuff on your coins.
But the hard plastic (or mylar) ones don't have this problem. Basically if they're rigid, hard stiff plastic, you're good, but avoid cheap, soft, flips (which probably contain PVC).
I keep the core collection in caps, themselves on trays, themselves in 5- or 10 trays cases asa shown below:
But pertaining to the 5/5 flips, I was rather annoyed to tear them up when finding a nicer coins. I solved the issue with stappled flips that I do not stapple but insert them as they are in plastic sheets. I can so change the coin as needed:

I got this https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces11264.html and the lebanon version in a bulk lot not too long ago and thought they were toy money lol. They are two of my favorite pieces now.
Thank you...
Hold on those coins, they have a nice appreciating value specially the one from Syria... if you happen to have an extra one let me know as I am missing 1 for one of my kids collection.
