Netherlands East Indies Japanese gold Koban VOC [solved]

7 posts
Hello,

I am the new referee for the Netherlands and the Netherlands East Indies. There is al little backlog to work on.

One of them is the below coin. It is a Japanese Golden Koban which was legalised in the east Indies. It is counterstamped by the VOC (If I read correctly)

It doesnt change the fact it is a Japanese coin. Should this be added to the Netherlands East Indies or Japan? and it cant be added to a existing currency then.

Any asian or expert suggestions?

It was specifically modiffied for the country/ company and it was not used in Japan as currency.
Also it's not part of Japanese coin catalogs so I would put it in the catalog of the country it was made for not the country of origin ... like all the other counterstamped issues.
Allright that sounds right. Then it should be Netherlands East Indies. I will try to find any kind of currency or add a new one.

Since I've done lots of reading on the VOC coinage, I might have seen something about it (can't remember) but will have a look in the weekend

Hello,

I couldnt find extra info - sorry.

I would change coin name from "Koban - VOC Cut and Countermarked" to simpy "1 Koban" since the currency states that these pieces are countermarked. I would also add the visible lettering like "N483" to the lettering field.

Please include the certificate pic in the coin sheet - comments section. It would be nice to have it, since you already mentioned it.

Also, I would request the following in this topic:
https://en.numista.com/forum/topic51506.html
(you can copy-paste the below)

Please change:
Netherlands East Indies - Countermarked Coinage (1686-1694)
30 stuivers = 1 rupee • 90 stuivers = 1 ducaton • 480 stuivers = 10 rixdaler
to:
Netherlands East Indies - Countermarked Coinage (1686-?)
30 stuivers = 1 rupee • 90 stuivers = 1 ducaton • 480 stuivers = 10 rixdaler = 1 Japanese koban

the previous date range I wrote was based on info from krause and wikipedia listing countermarked coins between these dates. but if there are japanese pieces countermarked in the 1700s then I'd edit the currency date range rather than having another currency for them. the "?" can be amended later if you got info about when the countermarking stopped

thanks a lot :)
