Good evening everyone
I would like to publish this post because I recently heard something that changed my thoughts of war:
one day I heard someone talk about a theory dealing with the U.S. bombing aircraft to Europe during the second world war
the theory is this:
he said the bombers were empty of the United States to Newfoundland where they were loaded into a fuel to air across the Atlantic to Ireland (where they will land in the vicinity of Shannon (where he appears, he would trace of aerial crossings (including the American pilots pub))
arrived in Ireland they were loaded with arms and headed to Europe where they ... discharged
after that: come back to home x.
the trouble is that Ireland has always remained neutral during the conflict
more American aircraft had not (I think) radius of action rather than for new land link to Shanon (unless you go by the Bermuda ...)
What do you think of this theory?
Thank you for your answers, if any:)

An interesting theory (not sure where it came from) but you need to take into account the numerous USAF bomber bases in mainland UK, particularly southern England (there was one about 5 minutes from where I live).
Just because you can't see it ... doesn't mean it isn't there - Anon.
Perhaps you are not aware...but...Shannon may well be in Ireland: but I should imagine that as there must have been a US Air Force Base. So, the US Base will be US soil. Like an Airport is International soil, until you are beyond the border or an Embassy is on it's own country's soil no matter which country it is in. So Ireland has its neutrality intact.

Diplomatically, isn't the granting of rights to build or maintain a military installation within a State's natural borders either (a) a non-neutral act, or (b) the result of such a base being extorted or taken by force (Gibraltar, Guantanamo).
If Switzerland had permitted US troop concentration within its borders during World War II, wouldn't Hitler have (justifiably, in theory) taken that as an act of aggression?
I think you can't get too legalistic about diplomatic acts. Diplomacy is just as much a visceral practice as it is a legalistic one.
A good argument, tewcd. Still, I wouldn't say any country was entirely neutral anyway.
Bombers or not...Ireland as a state didn't have a role to play...and not being an expert on Shannon Air Base...I was just merely responding to the theory.
Ifind it hard to belive US bombers could make it across the atlantic, after all the spruce goose was designed for that puropse why go to the effort of designing such a plane if others already do it.
Also the british would not want to give Hitler any excuse to invade Ireland as this would have been a stratigic nightmare for us as it would have made an invasion possible on all coastlines forcing us to spread our defensive forces even more finely.
