Redesign the dime

My fellow Americans...

Over the last 17 years, all circulating US coins have had a design update, except one.

The quarter has seen constant rotating reverse designs since 1999 and will continue in such through 2021. The nickel hosted a commemorative series, then began an updated portrait in 2006. The cent also ran a commemorative series in 2009 followed by a new reverse. Our banknotes has seen frequent design updates since 1996.

The era of longstanding coinage designs, stagnant for decades, appears to be ending. The Washington eagle quarter, a familiar workhorse of American commerce, was in production for 66 years, since its introduction in 1932. Felix Schlag's portrait of Jefferson adorned nickels for 65 years starting in 1938.

However, there is one common coin that has so far retained its traditional vestige... the dime. The portrait of Franklin Roosevelt, and the inspiring reverse of the torch of liberty, have graced every dime struck in the last 70 years, setting a new record for design longevity.

It is time for the dime to change. I propose that the dime bear the image of a hero widely respected by all Americans and by the entire world.... Neil Armstrong. A portrait of the first man on the moon should appear on the obverse, surounded by the text "United States of America - 10 cents" and the date and mintmark. The reverse should bear a reproduction of the famous footprint on lunar soil left there by the astronauts of Apollo 11, along with the caption "We come in peace for all mankind." These are inspiring symbols that America and the world over are all proud of, and there can be no more fitting tribute than the canvas of the everyday dime.

This new design should go into circulation starting in 2019, to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11.

But our late President, Mr. Roosevelt, ought not to fade away from American currency. His leadership through the Depression and World War II, along with his unprecedented four terms in office, has earned him a place in our historical stature. I propose that Franklin Roosevelt replace Ulysses Grant on the $50 banknote.

I am interested in sending this proposal to key Congressmen and other stakeholders. What do you think?

Frankly I would like to see Liberty put back on the coins. Much better to cast our aspirations and admiration towards a ideal rather than towards any specific "great man".
I like the idea.
If it ain't broke don't fix it. I like the dime design, and if Switzerland can keep their coin designs for so long then the US can too ;)
I've never been an admirer of FDR who I regard as a manipulative warmonger but I have to admit he is one of America's most influential Presidents and deserves his place on the currency, just like that other manipulative warmonger Lincoln. I've always stongly believed that the only people depicted on US coins should be the Founders and safely dead Presidents.

Anything else is just an invitation to controversy and discord, both of which we have a surplus of in 2016. Neil Armstrong is universally respected right now but how long will it be before he is discredited by the pinheads and their dead white male bashing agenda? George Armstrong Custer was a national hero until he suddenly wasn't. Charles Lindenberg was equally beloved in his day but he is now viewed with some distaste because of his endorsement of Hitler and the Third Reich. When you put someone on a coin it's forever, regardless of the current "thinking".

I have no strong feelings about the dime being redesigned but it would be out of synch with the rest of our coinage to have a non President on it. I'm sure there are a lot of people who might consider Kanye West to be a suitable replacement for Abe Lincoln on the Cent and an equal number who would like Dr Duke on the Nickel. It's a slippery slope.

Just imagine the national embarassment we would now be suffering if we had released a Lance Armstrong dollar!
Non illegitimis carborundum est.  Excellent advice for all coins.

But isn't that the Susan B. Anthony? Well if it works don't change gender
It is, what it is, or is it.
Sorry a bit out of line. But then again if a frog had wings , it wouldn't bump it's ass when it hoped ether

After seeing all the abominations which came out of the State Quarters Program (OK there were a few nice ones), I say leave it alone. I like Neil Armstrong, I love the space program, but please don't touch the dime. How about a nice set of commemoratives: https://www.congress.gov/bill/114th-congress/house-bill/2726/text

Well, sacagawea graces the $1 coin. Granted, the coin failed to circulate much. Though I don't buy the argument that only founding fathers and dead presidents make for good non-controversial designs on regular circulating coinage.

However, not updating a design for 70 years is being just plain lazy lol. Atleast redesign FDRs' portrait. Why not include something about space on the other side. However, the US to me is falling behind the space race - either to other countries, or eventually to private enterprise. Just anything less abstract than a liberty torch which really is quite staid as a symbol form centuries gone by.
I'd support putting the classical liberty back on the coins, maybe touch up the 1920s designs (Mercury, Standng Lib, Walking Half) a bit and re-release them. 1916 was the year most of those were released; 100 years later seems to be the perfect time to re-release them.
