Canadian 50 Cent Pieces and other Questions about Canadian Coins...and some U.S.A. Coins / World Coins

I just have a couple of general questions about collecting coins.
I'm not really well versed by any means, but it sure has been nice for some people to reach out to me and help me figure things out as I go.
I've been collecting for about a year now and have a few cool good trades under my belt so far on this site.
This website is really cool!

I just have a few questions on how to go about things more...

* I've posted a few topics about wanting this and that coin from Canada etc. etc. are we able to delete any of the older posts that we do? (like if they are old and outdated?)

* Also this one... Does anyone out there know if there are any common 50 cent pieces in circulation in Canada? Like here in the States you can find them once in a while, but I was wondering if it was the same or similar up there? I only have 1 so far and I think that these might be the hardest ones to add to my collection. (Do you think that these one's will be the hardest to find?)

* Do people often use Loonies and Toonies up in Canada to pay for things? Down here where I live, like if you use dollar coins to pay for anything, they look at you like you are nuts. Just was wondering if it's more common and exceptionable up there?

* Are some of the older coins worth more than their face value? Like I am most interested in pennies. (haha!) But now that I am doing really well in collecting them in my coin books, I seem to need to be trying to find older pennies from the 20's 30's 40's and 50's. (oh and I also need to find 1 more 2012 non magnetic penny!) I kinda get the impression that some of them are worth more than a cent obviously. (maybe like 5 or 10 or sometimes like a dollar, which is weird...).

* Another question is...The Canadian Coins that have color in them sometimes, are they in common circulation too? ...or are they just like collectors coins or something?

* Would anyone out there be willing to make a small trade with me (preferably in the States) like maybe an old nickel or dime (not silver material ones, just regular ones) or pennies? I'd like to get some more feedbacks and get at least to 10 by the end of summer. (I'm hoping someone will want to do a trade where like you just throw a couple of coins in an envelope and send it off for the cost of a stamp sorta thing haha! ) (maybe like a pen pal sorta thing ya know what I mean?) I don't have a lot of exciting coins hahaha... just American stuff and a few international ones. But I really only list mostly the US and CAN coins in my list to keep track of them.

I'm just trying to knock a few more off the list!

* Why are USA 2009 coins such a pain in the arse to find? I've been trying to find these U.S. State Territories Quarters forever and a day... I just just traded with someone and got one in the mail from them, but of course, the day before I got that package, I got the same coin in change at Dunkin Donuts... go figure... I can't find hardly any Denver coins at all like ever!!!

* Also if I were to ever "buy" a bunch of international coins like to start my own collection, how much should I pay and how many coins might I expect? Like how many coins might be in a pound etc? I kinda want to start collecting so I have more "trade-able" coins for some of the Canadian Coins that I want. But I'm not sure the best way to go about it. Like I will get a couple from the bank once in a while, or from friends, but if I want to get like a bunch just to start, what is the best way to go about it? Like sometimes I see some people wanting to sell coins by the pound for x amount of dollars. What's a good rule of thumb?

Anyways, just wondering if anyone can help me out.

1) I don't think you can delete old posts, you can edit them though.
2) 50 cent pieces don't circulate some coin shops will give them back as change as a curiosity but they are basically never used.
3) loonies and toonies are used everyday, we don't have 1 and 2 dollar bills anymore and you wouldn't want change for a 5er in quarters would you?

5) yep coloured coins are in circulation, very much so.

For the 2009 Americans I don't really know, but if I was you I would take a look on eBay sell prices for coins by the kg, it'll give you a good idea, and some of the lots can be quite good!

I believe 50 cent coins are even harder to find in Canada than in the US. In the US, banks still occasionally have them and businesses can actually order boxes of them if they want, but I believe that in Canada the Mint won't even send 50 cent coins to the banks anymore.

Just about all US coins had very low mintage in 2009 (nickels and dimes had some of the lowest mintages ever that year), because of the recession I believe.

I got started with world coins last year by buying a 5 lb bulk lot from eBay. I think I spent $35, which is a decent price I think. There is a member on the forum here selling 5 lb lots for $31, I think - might be worthwhile for you. On average, figure about 100 coins per pound.

If you want to check out my swap list to see if I have any Canadian coins you are missing, feel free. I collect wheat pennies and other US coins by year, and I think you have some I could use.

That is interesting that colo(u)red coins are in circulation. I live right across the border and have never seen one, though I do get other commemoratives from time to time (mostly the quarters, but last year I got a really nice centennial nickel in change). I would have thought the colorful coins would be hoarded rather than spent.

i just traded someone for my second 50 cent piece from canada it is a 1995, so that was exciting to get!
1 and 2 dollar bills are not used anymore in canada? crazy!

Ya anymore, where I live, it's pretty tough to find 50 pieces.
I have a few from the us and i finally just got my 2nd one from canada a 95

2009 quarters are a pain to find!
i am gonna see if i can trade someone for them rather than wait and try to find them in the wild.

so on average, one might get around a hundred coins per pound?
i do see sometimes people selling them on here, but i never know if i should go for it or not...

i will check the list you have for sure.
i only have some, mostly american coins to trade right now (and wheat's of course)
not incredibly exciting, but it's what i got...

like i said, mostly after coins from canada right now and some additional us coins.

I'm not sure if you're still checking this, and I think most of the questions have been answered.

There are older coins that are worth more than face value, the further back you go the better the chance that they will be. Particularly with the silver coins.

There are also variations that are more prized, such as Dot Coins. In January of 1936 King George V died, and Edward VIII stepped in, but in December he decided to abdicate and the plates that had been made for his coinage had to be scrapped. There was so much demand for small change that they went back to the old plates, punched a small hole in them as a marker and went with it. So any 1936 coins you see with a dot on the reverse were minted in 1937, but are very rare.

There was a similar situation in 1948, where they punched a small maple leaf after the date in the 1947 dies for the early part of the new year to keep up with demand.

http://www.coinsandcanada.com/index.php is actually a good site to get a general idea of what the value might be, but I wouldn't take their word as gospel. It's just a good launching point. You can also see the variations for each year there. It's a pretty nice database.

Also, yes the coloured coins are in our pocket change and it's awesome.

If I were you though, I would ask Santa Claus for the Charlton Standard Catalog of Canadian Coins. Even if you get an older issue, say 2014, you will have all you need to know about Canadian Cents as they were discontinued in 2012. Great reading any time too!!

A bit off-topic, but I can't figure out how to see a person's want list. I even sent some poor stranger a swap request where I offer nothing, I have no idea how I did that.

I know every time I want to try and send something up to Canada it always cost at least $9.50!

I am trading with another person up in Canada now too he is going to send me a few nickels dimes and quarters!

I got some kind of weird Canadian Token or something for my coin collection.

It's kinda cool and kinda weird...pretty large sized coin too.
When I looked it up, the website was saying it is a Numista Rarity Index: 95
