I used to play but I've not finished many games. Every time I used to get into a winning situation against my sister or schoolmates or parents they would upset the board and storm away.
Yes, but not for a long time. Still have my collection of chess sets from when I used to collect them somewhere, reminds me of another forum regarding someone collecting chess related coins. Keep meaning to set them all up and photograph them all, might do that over this weekend
I was in the Chess club in my 3rd year at seniors school (Year 9 these days) and got to rank 3. I had beaten both rank 2 (an upper 6th form student) and rank 1 (our head of maths) one time each but they'd beaten me a lot more than that lol.
Not really played much since leaving school (all those years ago)
- What is again this ridiculous object, Gaston ?
- Great ha ! It is an automat that plays chess. I bought it today at the flee market.
- Curious to see that!
- He is very strong said the dealer.
- Ok. I played. What will the champion do now?
- I was told he always wins!
POC
- See, see !
Just opened my chest of chess for the first time in a long time lol, going to get all these out tomorrow, set them all up and get some pics.
first time I've used this phone to upload a pic direct too so hope this works...
Ok, I've actually had hours of fun this morning setting up and photographing all my chess sets (22 in total), had totally forgotten about some of them (and that 2 of them had a missing piece....grrrrrr). Will post in batches, then would love to see other peoples sets - including full sets of those you had posted Oggy if you wouldn't mind, they look amazing.
1st batch:
Had to use same board to show both of these. 1 of them used to be displayed on a chess coffee table, but I must have gotten rid of it some time ago, not seen it in years.
See if you can spot the odd piece out in the bottom right set.
I especially love the 'table' set - is that marble/jade?
I'll set mine up later today; Unfortunately I only have one board left as an unscrupulous landlord from my last place stole many of my collectables.
The cast metal one isn't fully made yet; might make a little video showing the casting of a piece. They only take about 5 minutes to cast now that I've made all the moulds! (And about 5 hours to paint, but thats a whole other story)
This final one was going cheap as the chess pieces were missing, but the draughts and backgammon pieces were still there. I bought it anyway as I loved the design on the board itself (backgammon board is on the reverse, inside the box.

Thanks Oggy,
According to the box it came in, it is an onyx/marble set. Can't even remember which country i bought this one in, I think it might have been Cyprus.
I remember visiting a chess shop in one of the countries I went to (again, can't remember exactly which one), and it was wall-to-wall chess sets, all absolutely amazing and ranging from cheaper small sets to huge collectable sets. I was in absolute awe at the time!!
That one was one I bought from that "chess shop" i mentioned in an earlier post, they had hundreds of different sets like this and all different styles etc. It was only when I got it back to the UK after the holiday and looked properly however I realised one of the pawns was different and has come from a different set...nevermind

My father taught me chess when I was ten, and it took many 3-4 years of practice before I won.
I played competitively in middle school and won a few trophies. My high school chess team disbanded before I got there. The school's administration dimly viewed all games, even chess, as gambling and banned them all.
Since 2012, I teach chess and go to school kids for an hour every week.
Boardgaming is one of my oldest and strongest passions, even more than coins. I have over 200 different games at home. I have even invented a few: http://www.ceruleansgames.tripod.com
EDIT: This is the set my father gave me circa 1990, my first:
...and here are some the awards I won when I played competitively:
