Inexplicable generosity from a perfect stranger

I am consistently amazed by Numista's members and their generosity.... I am yet again speechless.

I had a member contact me and asked about meeting in person because he was going through my town on his way up north. I thought it would be very cool to meet a fellow Numista member and especially one that I know from the forum. Well, he only wanted five coins that didn't total $5 and I noticed this coin in his list, https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces69810.html I asked if there were any other coins he might be looking for because I have lots of good stuff that's not in my swap list. I was a bit disappointed that he was only interested in my five coins but still cheerful to meet. Well when we met, he showed me his coin, and it was quit a great coin, I said, "thanks for showing me, that its very cool" but when I tried to hand it back to him he just said, "its yours" and he would not take it back, or any form of extra payment! He then gave me a bunch of coins from Russia and Kyrgyzstan. I have found so much generosity on this site!

I found a bit of history about it here and it reads that its worth about $50 or even as much as $200 on ebay, so at least 10 x the value of what I gave to him and for a perfect stranger. http://coinquest.com/cgi-bin/cq/coins?main_coin=5710
Taking a break from swapping for a while, but still interested in pre 1799 Spanish coins, I will make time for that!

That's awesome.

There are lots of generous members on the site and many of them are humble along with it. I'm really glad that I found it and made contact and fellowship with other collectors that otherwise I would not have made, as there is no numismatic club in my city.
Wow! What a lovely gift...But not entirely inexplicable, it quickly becomes clear who the good guys are on this forum, those that consistently contribute with knowledge, wisdom and friendship.....and gestures of recognition are wonderful, but understandable.

Awesome! For both of you! :)

Not to hijack the thread but to share my experience meeting Numista members in person...

I'm lucky to have met 2 Numista members in person as well quite a few times already as one of them has introduced me to a local collectors club that I'm a member of now. He has introduced another very nice fella to the same club. We've made quite a few swaps between us. Next month is one year "anniversary" since Numista was presented to club members at the meeting that was my first. Next month, there is going to be another presentation - "Numista One Year Later" where the experiences and learnings over this past year will be presented to the club.

Reds' story is proof of why I love being a member of this site. While there are a small number of scammers and trolls, the vast majority of members are generous to a fault, including with their knowledge of coins and willingness to educate newbies.
I agree, for every scammer there are a dozen very worthwhile people. It's one of Numista's greatest strengths and the reason I despise thieves so much.

I get a great deal of personal satisfaction from picking out a coin related gift for a friend, I keep an eye open throughout the year for suitable Christmas presents. While I would never give anything to people who ask or are always first in line when anyone mentions "FREE" (usually grabbing anything they can resell , not what they actually need) I like to surprise young or new members occasionally.
Non illegitimis carborundum est.  Excellent advice for all coins.

Yes, he did, he told me that he didnt need any of my coins that would add up to the value of that coin so it was not available;)

Phil, what you say is true! "I agree, for every scammer there are a dozen very worthwhile people."
