This is not to single out ALLRED1950 or anyone else who posted in the thread, but I can't help but feel like some of the desire to have more coins in the catalog and make it more complete isn't fueled by these people. It is well known that there is a huge back log of pending coin adds and edits the is certainly stressing out the staff if their posts are to be believed. So why do people keep adding coins? I'm tying the red thread on the 10,000 coin group. There are already thousands and thousands of coins in the catalog, but this group collects coins different than I do, and has differently priorities, so their lust for more coins and their dissatisfaction with the thousands of coins already in the catalog is suspicious.
Once again, I am not singling out ALLRED1950. The only reason I am evening mentioning him is so people didn't think I was talking about him by not mentioning his name. My only goal is to call attention to trends that are clearly not the results of the structural issues on the site, and probably the work of a small, unofficial group of enthusiasts who love coins but who have different collecting goals than I do.
I dont think there is anything wrong or detrimental the the 10,000 coin club, or the 300 country club, its not interesting to me, but its fun for a lot of folks, and enjoyment is why we do anything. I don't know that wanting 10,000 coins is necessarily a lust for coins. One could have just as much lust for a single coin, as another has for 10,000 coins. Anyway, thats my two cents.
Taking a break from swapping for a while, but still interested in pre 1799 Spanish coins, I will make time for that!
I reckon all these "clubs" are good for Numista, but of course it all depends on your focus for your collection.
The reason why I think it's good is because Numista makes it really easy for you to get a nice overview of your collection. How many coins you have, how many different types you have, and how many countries you have.
If you, like me, are hunting to get at least one coin each from all the modern countries there is, it's really easy to see which countries you still need. The "300 country club" makes me then try even harder to complete this task, as well as expand my collect by include former colonies, etc.
Let's say you want to a huge impressive collection in quantity. And after adding your collction here you notice that you have, let's say, 8,796 coins. By the existence of the "10,000 coins club" you might find the will - and eager - to exapand even more to reach this milestone.
The same thing goes for the "XXX types" and "XXX silver coins" etc. If you are interested and want to both 'compete' and share your successes with the like-minded and to encourage each other.
Yes, it can also make those who's not that into geting 300 countries, 10,000 coins etc. to buy "unnecessary" coins, or buy things which you do not really want just because to "be a part in the club", then it is hurting both the collector (and his budget) and the site - since the site then will be associated with these bad feelings.
But in general I reckong these groups are good for the site. And if you are new to the site and feel like "oh, my collection is worthless since I don't fit in any of these groups", then you can simply engage yourself in the group you'd "like to join" and get tips how to reach your goal, etc. Don't feel the pressure that you have to "get there now", but ask for guidance how to prioritise your collection so you one day can reach your goal.
