It's probably kind of trivial and maybe not that worth while to most of you that are about to read this...
However, I guess it's worth a shot!

I am looking for some common everyday Canadian Coins to help fill up my Whitman Coin Folders.
I am just a casual collector that is really enjoying numismatics over the past 2 years or so.
It's really exciting, yet relaxing and calming to me...

I'm not into Silver and Gold, Rare and Old...
I just am primarily looking for someone to trade common everyday, circulated coins with me from that are from Canada.
Kinda like if you saw me at a grocery store or a bank and I was like, "eh...can I buy that 1996 Dime from you" LOL
Or, "Yo, I'll trade you this 1987 Nickel for your 1989 Nickel" hahaha
Just basically old fashion, silly fun I guess.

Anyways, I am just looking for a little help from someone(s) here on this site.
I am looking to trade some common Canadian Coins in trade for other common Canadian or American Coins.
So for example, if you have 5 common, everyday currency Dimes that I am looking for to put in my books...
I will buy them your 5 dimes for .50 cents or trade you something that you are looking for.
(American or Canadian coins)

I am not too fussy about the condition and what not.
I suppose as long as the dates are legible and the coins are in fair to decent shape.
Ya know just circulated, everyday stuff...
My Wife, Father in Law and I just are looking to fill our coin books with common unwanted, undesired coins that are basically only worth face value.
We do it for fun basically and cause we like the country a lot and love the animals on the coins too.

I don't expect anything rare or old or with silver in it.
It's more important to me to just get coins from recent times cause that's what I am more interested in.

I have not completed a trade with anyone yet, as I just joined the website.
But! I am hoping that someone will being willing to trade with me some time soon!
This is genuinely exciting to me!
(Either here in the United States where I live or from someone cool up in Canada)

I have a list of the coins that I am looking for listed below.
I am open to trading 1 coin for 1 or several at a time.
To me, nothing beats the excitement of stamp on a letter and a personalized note in the mail.
Call me old fashioned, but that's what makes me happy!
Hopefully I can build a friendly rapport with a few souls that share the same kinda passion for collecting common coins as I do.
If not, it's I'm OK with that too.
Just something to do ya know...
I just thought the idea of this would be pretty fun, that's all.
(the trading idea on this site is really cool I think!)

I will start out with Canadian Cents:

If you are "not in silver" - than why 3/4 of your list consists of Canadian silver coins? All nickels before 1922 (by the way - good luck finding 1921 Canadian 5 cents in somebody's pocket...), as well as all dimes, quarter, half and dollars before 1968 - they are all silver.

Maybe if you read the article again, you'll have a better understanding!

HI,

Just looking through your list I can help you take care of a few that don't actually exist. For the 1 dollar coins there are none dated 1900-1934 (except 1911 but I think there was only 3 made or something like that). There are also none dated 1940-1944. All the other dollars dated 1967 and prior are made of .800 silver. Going past the silver coins the dollars dated 1997-2001 were not released for circulation and can only be found in special sets that were purchased.

For half dollars there is no 1915, the 1921 is extremely rare, I think the last one I saw go to auction went for around $50,000. Then there are none dated 1922-1928, as well as 1930, 1933, 1935. Then again ones dated 1967 and prior are .800 silver (ones 1919 and prior are .925 silver).

For quarters there were none made between 1922-1926 and then again the ones pre 1967 are all .800 silver (and pre 191 are .925 silver)

For dimes, there were none made from 1922-27 and then the same thing pre 1967 are .800 silver and before 1920 they are .925 silver.

For the 5 cent coins anything 1919 and before is .925 silver. The 1920 is .800 silver and the 1921 like glycan said is also extremely rare and worth a few thousand dollars.

Hope this helps you with putting your sets together.

Hi again I have lots of 1 Cents in my list if you have anything that I collect at all?

Or are you just after freebie coins?
LittleJohn Metal Detecting
I'm a Canadian Cent "nutter".

Let me know when you get 1 of each 1922, 1923, 1924, and 1925 Cent for each of the 4 books. Book Value at the worst Grade (you can read the date), VG, should set you back about $300 usd.

Enjoy the hobby.
It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble.  It's what you know for sure, that just ain't so.  Mark Twain
well more or less, i am really just after the common pennies and common circulated coins from the more modern times.
it's kinda dumb how some people take this so much more serious than it really is...
i mean, i'd really just be happier getting as many modern coins as i can to fill in the coin books.
i don't expect to get anything old or rare...i really don't care either...
i'm just wanting to trade with someone that might have some of the newer coins that my family and i are looking for.
it seems some people take such great "offense" to the list i typed out that includes all these old year coins.
i just sit here and shake my head really...
it's odd how someone can take so seriously...it's not like you can take these coins with you to some after life or something.
i'm just trying to have a little fun that's all.
i'm also trying to sort out the differences between the canadian cents and the different portraits in the top middle section of the coin book.
(as you might see, i only have a couple of them filled in because i genuinely do not know the differences yet...)

i'm not going to apologize if my request or post offends anyone either.
one might consider therapy if you find it so absurd and brash over the words i've typed...

what ever happened to collecting anything for good old fashion fun?
oh, i guess monetarily that's not worth anything...

i'm not after freebies, i'm literally just looking for someone to trade cent for cent pretty much.

well that's my 2 cents...

eh

hi solar, thanks for the response mate.
ya, i guess from what i am learning most of the older coins have silver or whatever in them.
that's cool i guess, i don't really expect to ever get any of them however cause that's not really what i am after.
(the only exception however might be the 1967 rabbit coin...the 5 cent coin)
(i just think that the rabbit on the coin is cool! hahahha!!! :8D

but maybe it does not have silver?

it's cool to learn about the coins ect.
here in the states as you probably already know we have these crazy quarters with tons of parks and stuff on them. some of them are cool looking. i would like to get some of the canadian olympic quarters sometime. i think i only have one.

pretty much any canadian coins that i've gotten have been in change or in usa penny rolls.
it's always fun to get ones from canada for us because we think it's cool with the animals on the coins.
my favorite canadian cent is the 67 with the rock dove on it.
it reminds me of my grandpa when i was a younger kid.

i just wanted to ask this too...if you are from canada that is...
is it similar to the usa where you can find all the vancouver winter olympic games quarters in common change like say you would find the state quarters in change in america?
and also is it common to find 2012 cents in circulation?
we've have not gotten any in penny rolls down here yet in our every once in a while random searches.
latest one i got was 2011 and i guess now canada does not make them anymore.
the oldest one i ever found was a 1940 i think.
mostly we find ones from the 60's 70' and 80's which is still pretty cool.
cheers

I find your attitude towards collecting very engaging and wholesome. I collect coins because I love them too.

I have just finished drafting my own wanted lists much like your own, the 3rd Reich version is complete and includes all the key dates and rarities. I haven't finished my UK version yet but you can be sure it's gong to include some even rarer coins. That's not because I'm expecting to swap them for common dates, it's because.... well I "want" them, hence "wanted" list.

Silver coins are always going to be difficult. They have all but vanished from circulation since the recent price spike but it doesn't mean you can't collect them. If you don't really care much about condition you can find a friendly local coin store who might sell them to you for the daily spot price or ?x face value. With prices around $15 per ounce you can get quite a nice start for around $50. The more recent dates are so common that anything less than mint state is worth only it's metal content. It's very possible to pick out of the junk silver pile some nice high grade coins from the 1940's - 1960's. Duplicates can be swapped with other collectors for the dates you didn't find, a small investment will take you a long way down the road from collecting pocket change to becoming a real According to Hoyle coin collector.

Of course yo have now sold your soul and nothing ever replaces the satisfaction of finding you own coins at face value.

Good luck.
Non illegitimis carborundum est.  Excellent advice for all coins.

Here are some pictures of our Canadian Coin Books and Coins...
We've found quiet a few Canadian Cents over the years and decided to get books for everything!
(including the nickels, dimes, quarters, ect.)
I don't suspect that we'll ever find any 50 cent pieces and higher out in the wild here in the states. (that would be beyond crazy)...I would imagine that we'd pry have to buy or trade for them.
It will sure be fun to try however to see what we'll end up collecting!

I am starting to trade again please

Here are some others...haha!! :8D
I think besides the Canadian Cents
Our favorite is the 1967 Nickles (has a rabbit on it!!!)
And the quarters with the Caribou on them
The dollar coins are cool cause they have a duck on them.
Oh ya and the 1967 penny I think is our absolute favorite!
We've got about 8 or 9 of them!!!
The Olympic Quarters look pretty cool too, or interesting anyways 8.

Quote: "MrNeon8"Hi again I have lots of 1 Cents in my list if you have anything that I collect at all?

Or are you just after freebie coins?

no just random ordinary coins to fill up the coin books.
i don't expect ANYTHING for free!
i'm not really a hardcore coin person i guess like most of the people on here.
i'm just trying this out for fun and give me something relaxing to do.

did you see the pictures i posted?
basically i am trying to "fill in the blanks" pretty much.
i don't suspect i will find many older coins, but the new more modern ones (pry like from the 60's or 70's and up are probably more realistic to find).
i only really have common stuff to trade anyways haha, so probably no one at all will be interested anyways!

i was reading online that 50 cent pieces from canada area not really much in circulation.
so i guess i'll pry never find any of those out in the wild.
the thing that my wife, father in law and i are mostly stomping for are a 2012 penny.
i guess there is a magnetic and a non magnetic one.
we each have one of those warman books and none of us have found one yet!!! haha!!

my wife is hoping to get the 1990, 2003, 2008 and 2009 canadian cent too.
my father in law i think has from like 1940 or so all the way up to the 2011.
(so it's driving him bananas that he can't find the 2012 yet i think lol hahaha!!!)
it's like a game for us i guess :8D

Looks like you are off to a fairly good start. I have the same Whitman books for all the denominations for Canadian and US coins, definitely a good feeling to be able to fill in a few spots every once in a while. I see that you did end up getting some 1967 rabbit nickels so I guess you have learned that they are not silver. The only silver 5 cent pieces are 1921 and earlier (they are very small and weighed half as much as the dimes back then). The Olympic quarters are still fairly common to get in circulation, I haven't seen too many in my change in the last two years or so but every time I pick up a few quarter rolls from the bank I always get some in there. For some reason I still hold onto them and have them sitting in a binder even though I know they aren't really worth any premium. Maybe someday I will get around to putting some complete sets together and seeing if there is any interest. I just finished my state quarter collection last year (Illinois D took me forever to find), I was able to find most of them in my change or coin roll hunting here in Canada, got a bunch more from trips to the US. I have been having a much harder time trying to keep up with the National Park quarter series but enjoy going through my change hoping to find some new ones I don't have yet. The presidential dollar (and Sacagawea dollar) series are another favourite of mine to collect however every time I go to the US and ask around for these "dollar coins" I always seem to just get a blank stare, so many Americans don't even know these coins exist I think.

Someday I will get one for my own book!!!

P.S. you'll pry get a kick out of this...
So, I went to the post office yesterday, I was sooooooo excited cause I figured the package that you sent would show up.
But it didn't and I was like AH MAN!! lol!
It's so funny, cause like I haven't been this excited about something so silly since I was a kid or whatever...

SO THEN! I went today, I tracked it on the website and it said out for delivery ect. ect.
So I was like, alright, I will go to the bank and get some money for gas, get gas, go to the grocery store, get some romaine lettuce and carrot tops for my bunny rabbit and then I will go to my po box.
So then, as I was putting the key into the po box, I saw nothing in there and I sighed cause I was like, oh man, I am gonna have to come all the way back here!
But just then, just as I sighed, the lady on the other side was like WAIT!!! LOL!!!
And she was like, I have a key for you here!!!! hahahaha!!!!
And I was like, OH BOY!!!!
She was laughin, I was laughin!
She could not see me, I could not see her...
And I was like oh awesome!!!
It was literally like perfect timing (off by a half second, literally!!!)
I got home and put my groceries away and viola!!
I opened the package you sent to me!!!
Totally superb!!!
I am going to be excited for weeks about this hahaha!!!
So now, I have to put your coin package together and send it out to you!
I will let you know as soon as I get the tracking # and let you know what it is!!!

Thanks so much!!!

solar penny,

Ya we've got the Whitman books for the American coins too. We are missing a few illusive coins from the modern days LOL, they are tough to find sometimes!!
You are right, nothing like the thrill of ploppin a coin you don't have in the ol coin book!
Especially the wheat pennies, those are our favourites to find!! haha!!

Yes! I did end up getting some Rabbit Nickels!!! I didn't need or expect to get 40 of them haha! but that was the only way I could get them I guess. So I will keep some and the rest I will pry trade away or something. And as for them not being silver...I don't really care too much for that. The main reason I wanted a couple so bad is because my wife and I love rabbits haha!! We have a pet bunny and he is the center of our universe!

The Olympic Quarters would be really neat to find someday (common circulation) You are right, I liken them to the US State Quarters and such. The Illinois D and the Alaska D took me forever to find too!! So you are from Canada??? I've always wanted to ask someone up there this! Do you find a lot of American coins in your change like we do in the states? I mean I don't think we actually find "a lot" mostly pennies (which is cool of course) but every once in a while, you'll get lucky and find a nickel or dime or quarter. I always wondered if Canadian people ever find American money mixed in with there coins? (like more often then not or about the same or hardly ever, ect.)

I can always find some state park quarters down here. They are tough to keep up with. So far, I've been lucky and have all the P coins and only like 1 or 2 D's.
My wife is not as into it as I am, she has about half of them so far I think. But when ever we find them, we always check her book to see if she has it or not.
If you ever want to trade, I can give you some National Park quarters that are newer some time.

The presidential dollars after a certain year I guess are not in common circulation. It's dumb. You have to buy them on line in order to collect them. Fortunately you can get them at a reasonable price usually, but it's kinda annoying cause you end up paying for than the coin is really worth at face value...It's like a government scam or something I think haha. I have a few of them, but definitely not all of them. My father in law likes to collect them, so I buy them for him and send them off as small gifts every once in a while. I am more into just common things I suppose.

Sacagawea are sorta tough to find too. Usually if you go to the bank, you are right, they sit there and blank stare like you are talking Icelandic or something to them...Americans are more into there credit cards I guess than anything...If you have a list of quarters, I can keep an eye out for you if you want. It's pretty fun LOL!

The wheat pennies and Indian head cents are two of my favorite sets to collect as well, haven't gotten anything to put into those books in a while though. I really liked collecting the Canadian cent coins but when I finished that set I took more of an interest in the US ones. I seem to find a lot of US change up here, quarters are really common, the first 15 or so state quarters I ever collected I got from change. I pick up a roll of quarters from time to time from the bank and always seem to find 2-3 in there. Lately I haven't been finding too many (maybe because the Canadian dollar is low). Used to find a lot of pennies before 2012 also. I will take a look through my national park quarters sometime this week and figure out which ones I am missing, I think I have most of the D's and very few P's. I will send you a PM afterwards and we can work out a swap, I've got lots of Canadian commemorative quarters and could look through my other denominations. I've bought almost all of my presidential dollars, was able to get them for a little bit more than face value but it takes a little bit of the fun out of it when you aren't able to find them in circulation.
Ya, I think collecting Wheat Pennies is my favorite now that I think about it a little more. It's wicked fun to get find them in penny rolls from the bank and just kinda build up an arsenal of them. They are not worth all that much to collectors I guess because they are just a somewhat common penny or whatever. But I like them cause they are still pretty common to find once in a while. Same thing with Canadian Cents. I love collecting them too no matter what the year is. Once in a while you will find a King George from like the 30's or 40's or whatever and that's really extra cool cause of the way they look. (at least in my opinion anyways...)

As of right now, I do have all the State Quarters both P and D and all of the National Parks Quarters with P. The D's are not so easy to come by where I live because I think that all the P coins are distributed on the east coast of the states and the D's are all out west. So the D's take a really long time to find there way over here. I think that I only have 1 D National Park Quarter and that's it. I guess I'm not too amped up on getting them, if I do, I do, if I don't I don't...It's just cool if one stumbles up on ya basically. Really, it's more exciting to get a Canadian Quarter back in change to me (if ya ever get one) than any ol American Quarter. Although...the 2009 Quarters are REALLY tough to find out in the wild. I think there was like 6 of them released with both P and D and I have just a healthy mix of each. I'm not sure if I will really ever get them or not, I mean I do want them, but again, if I do or don't I really don't care that much.

As far as the presidential coins, those are pretty cool too, but I guess that the mint stopped general circulation after a certain year. I think that is pretty dumb. So now, you have to "buy" them and then people, then turn around and sell them on the internet. It's really stupid I think. I personally like to find collect the coins that are in general circulation, but my Father in Law likes them all. I get them for him as gifts and presents and such...This is really the only way that I can justify spending more than a dollar on a dollar coin...The principal of it is just so damn crooked of the United States Government. (what else is new though...)

I guess that's why I'm not really in to silver and gold either. I just kinda think it's a joke really. I mean I have like a couple of coins that have silver in them, but I don't get all bent about it. I like coins for there design, there variations and just in general learning about different places in the world that I could only dream to see with my own eyes!!! Can you imagine ever really going to some of these places? Like Iceland or Mozambique or The Cook Islands, or where ever?! It's crazy! Having a couple of coins from there, makes me feel like that is about as close as I ever might get to actually going there in the physical form. Sad in a way, but, it is what it is ya know...

I think I like coins with animals on them the most. I think that's why I'm more partial to the Canadian Coins. The coins there to me are way cooler looking than the American ones. This one really cool guy ALLRED sent me a ton of Canadian Pennies, Nickels, Dimes, Quarters and even a couple of Dollar Coins in the mail last week. I couldn't believe it! It was really rad! All from like the 60's, 70's, 80's and so on...Even a few crazy old pennies from like the 30's! It was absolutely nuts! (to me anyways!) I sent him back a big package of coins yesterday, "for trade" with a tracking # but I can't seem to figure out how to leave him a good comment or feedback. (I'm still new on the site and I am trying to work that out.) I just want to be able to have a couple of "successful trades or transactions" on the site, to be able to build up a trust I suppose, ya know what I mean? Hopefully this person will get the package I sent to him cause I am really excited for him to get the coins that I sent to him for all the awesome Canadian Coins he sent me! I sent him a few messages and stuff, but I haven't heard back from him at all...So I hope ALLRED is ALL RIGHT! (haha...  : - /

Anyways, I have to update my list of Canadian Coins now cause he sent me like 30 some coins. It really helped fill in some blanks that's for sure! It's pretty fun, so ya if you ever want to trade or if you are looking for some specific quarters, you can send me a message too and I will take some time to find them and sort ya out. My goal is to try and get everything that I can that's in common circulation from the Canadian side, plus some "older ones". I don't imagine that I will ever fill a book up completely before I die, but it will sure be fun trying! This is really the only thing that is keeping me sane right now while living in such an insane world, ya know what I mean?!?!

P.S.
I'm pretty surprised that you USA quarters that common in Canada, interesting. Do people at stores except them? Or do they say, nope.

First of all check my swap list. I read the comment about buying presidential dollars. I found the best way to get them is to go to the bank and ask for rolls of dollar coins. You get them at face value. Sometimes there are also sacagaweas and the occasional sba,

Hey solar penny and xblamecanadax I have about 12 dollars in wheat penny's just getting dusty let me know which ones you need. They will be circulated.
It is, what it is, or is it.
I have plenty of circulated commems Canadian quarters from role hunting. Plus other circulation commen coins sealed in coin packs from the mint, starting in 2012. I do have several 2010 Olympic quarters. I nnewould be willing to do a small trade for some ATB quarters, as I have none. I find the odd US coin roll hunting, which I don't do much. I think solar penny is also a member on coin community forum. I have kept the same ID here. You many let me know. Roxanne
Wahhoooo!!!!

Probably not a big deal, but non the less I certainly am chuffed!!!!

I was in shock and disbelief!
I got the coins in the mail on Tuesday, but was busy with school and work all week (like crazy busy!!!)
I just got done sorting out everything and cataloguing them too!
You gave me an entire string of Canadian Millennium Coins!
I've never seen them in person before like this and now they are in my Canadian Coin Book!!!
I will have to send you pictures in my next email!

I am going to put together a package this weekend for you in return!
(It's gonna be tough, cause I am not sure I will be able to top this!! HAHAHA!!!)

Here are some comments about the coins!

1 Cent - 1917 - Holy Sh!t?! That's a real coin?! I've never seen this one before!!! I did some research and found out that there were a lot of "Large Pennies" even before I knew about them. I guess before 1922 there were these "Large Type" coins! Penny's are definitely my favorites, but this one takes the cake!!! I ordered a new Canadian Coin Book on line for large cents. (I've never seen these before~!)

5 Cents - 1935, 1954 - The 1935 is the oldest 5 cent coin that I have from Canada thanks to you, this thing is freeking awesome! I also already have a 1954 5 cent, but it still rules because of the crazy shape of it!!! I love it! Thank you!!!

25 Cents:
1999 - December - Awesome!! I needed that one! (Caribou!!!!)

2000 - January - Pride
2000 - February - Ingenuity
2000 - March - Achievement
2000 - April - Health
2000 - May - Natural Legacy
2000 - June - Harmony
2000 - July - Celebration
2000 - August - Early Family
2000 - September - Wisdom (I think this one is my favorite quarter out of this group)
2000 - October - Creativity
2000 - November - Freedom Liberty
2000 - December - Community

I literally almost crapped my pants when I started to look through these!!! OMG! They are so cool! I love Canadian Coins!!! Like I don't even know what to say! They are so rad!!!

2 Dollar Coin - 1996 - AWESOME~!!! I only had like 1 of these in my collection, these are cool cause they are heavy and have a polar bear on them and polar bears rule.

I am very grateful and really excited over this! Freak out time!!! Thanks a ton! I will put together a package for you this weekend and send it out on Monday.

It is, what it is, or is it.
Does anyone know if up in Canada 50 cent pieces are in common circulation like down here in the states?
i have not collected any yet and soon i might be on the hunt for them.

also does anyone know when the coins called loonies and toonies started? (the 1$ and 2$ coins)
and does canada still make them for the more modern years? (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 ect.) ?

i am going to start to try and find nickels and dimes i think next from up there from the 2000's

Loonies have been in wide circulation since 1987, toonies since 1996. Half dollars barely circulate at all. Loonies and toonies are still in production after a composition change in 2012.

50 Cent coins have never really circulated here and majority of people even those working in banks don't know Canada even makes them or what they look like. Like Cerulean said loonies have been around since 1987 and toonies since 1996 prior to these years paper money for these denominations were common even though dollar coins were still produced prior to 1987, they never really circulated. They still produce the basic design to date, it did change over in 2012. The major exception is that this year (2016), there will be no basic loon dollar produced, it will only be two different commemorative designs.
oh ok cool, that is good to know.
eventually i will also start looking for these
cheers
