1887 UK Double Florin Grades and Valuations

Hello, just looking for opinions on the grade and value of this coin:

The picture is too blurry to say whether it's aunc or xf
I agree with Mr Kollico, EF possibly AU. The obverse has that "hard" polished look which is common on non silver forgeries but I think that's due to the photo. While I'm hesitant about the grade (AU is most likely judging by the better quality reverse picture) I'm 100% positive that you are experienced enough to spot a pot metal fake at 100 yards.

There are two types of coins for that year with either a Roman (I) or Arabic (1) style number one in the date, with the Roman type having a premium of  10% over the Arabic one. Happily yours is the Roman type. (Please note that all subsequent years, 1888 - 1890,  lack this variety)

In terms of value it's the cheapest date (I love cheap dates, whether coins or girlies) of the series. Catalog price is a bit over $100 in this condition but as with most coins you can find them for much less.  They lack the popularity of Crowns, probably because they also lack the lovely Saint George reverse.  I've been pretty actively searching out Crowns and Double Florins and I've noticed that because of the low silver price that there is a lot of interest from collectors who would normally pass on these coins because of the cost. These newer collectors tend to be less fussy about condition so they are bidding like crazy on worn, holed and cleaned coins which often sell for more than a nice EF coin! They are a real blessing in disguise! Just make sure it's a reputable source  or you will end up with an Alibaba knock off.

I'm trying to get the full set which is the easiest English series to complete, well....  apart from the cost that is. I have a short list of eBay sellers with whom I've dealt for many years and I place optimistic bids every time they list an EF or better Double Florin. No luck so far except for a very nice AU 1887 type 2 much like the one above! Patience is the key.
Non illegitimis carborundum est.  Excellent advice for all coins.

I've noticed the trend actually Phil, I bought a 1928 wreath crown in VF for less than a VG+ / F went for which seems embarrassing to me. Although I won't complain either, I've recently extended my colonial and homeland crowns extensively the last few months but still lack in some of the earlier issues :)
