1900 French Indochina 1 Piastre -- real or fake?

3 posts
Leads me to believe it is real -- diameter ok, weight ok, reacts to a rare earth magnet like silver coins do, 1900 doesn't appear to be a common date for fakes, possible chopmark on observe.

Leads me to believe it is fake -- pretty dinged up edges even though don't see reed splits (trying to hide something?), some porosity on edge and at letters near tip of anchor.

Could it be a counterfeit made out of silver back in the 1900s?

It's got a chopmark, don't see the porosity you're talking about. Probably not a fake, and if it's a fake, it's definitely not a recent one.

Thanks for the response KennyG.  It's nice to get a learned opinion on the coin.  The porosity can be seen at the bottom of the S and the E in FRANCAISE on the Observe.
