help grade and valuate my cartwheel 2 pence

nice coin, shame about the gauges in it. I would grade it VG, and expect to pay £15 to £20 gbp.
Really unfair grading I think, would say VF with damage

I agree.  If it went in for grading it would probably be a VF details
VF with damage?

I have some lovely worn down coins that are otherwise uncirculated.

Maybe I am undergrading my coins. Dont misunderstand me this is a nice coin, but would you pay anywhere near VF book value or would you expect to pay for it as if it were VG
The grade of the coin, the amount of detail that is showing is way more than VG, the price it may fetch may be closer to VG because of the damage.  But that's what the "details" grading is for.
Details is for coins with a surface that has been cleaned and can't give a legible grade too as a result of it. This is just damaged both rim and surface I would say F because there is good detail and you do expect damage, especially to the rim of such a big heavy coin.
Don't forget that the grading process is not an absolute, empirical science and should be performed whilst understanding the nature of the coin and what is likely to be expected in terms of circulation wear or damage. This coin is a huge great bloody lump of Copper which is a very soft metal and knocks and dings are to be expected during its 200+ years of kicking around this planet. Considering that so many of these pieces are now just smooth, polished paper weights, I think the detail on this coin is a fine example, it is likely to be quite desireable and should easily fetch a price equal to an F grade, if not better.
