Listed as: This auction is for an authentic Medieval bronze jetton, 1200 AD-1500 AD.  On the obverse side: Four fleur de lis on a shield & script.  On the reverse side: Decorated cross.  Reference: Benet's #M23-0104.  It is in good condition with beautiful patina.  Measures 26mm across.  Found in Europe.

So it looks like a French or Tournai Jetton. There are many Jettons of various types on this long page ...

and one is described on there as:
  French copper-alloy Jeton 1380AD
Obverse: Shield of France bearing three fleur-de-lys
  Reverse: trefoil x 4

Hi

It might be a jeton from tournai 15th century.

Thanks for the web links. They will be useful for identifying some other jetons that I have.

I wish I could read the Lombardic lettering better, to help find it; maybe   + ??NAN?AT  ?????ELAI
I used PhotoScape to superimpose and rotate modern red letters over some of the Medieval ones ...

May be decribed as: Three fleurs-de-lis within a shield, all within an inner, plain circle. The points of the shield touch the inner circle. The inner circle is surrounded by a legend in Lombardic script, which is in turn surrounded by an incomplete beaded outer circle. The legend appears to be jumbled.
Reverse: Triple-stranded cross fleuretty in a four-arch frame. Reverse inscription: none

Thanks for the info Zac

I like the idea of using PhotoScape for the lettering. Did you purchase PhotoScape or is it a freeby.

My attempt at deciphering the lettering yields +D?NANTAT  ETL??DELAI

 It is a free download.
Will add in a moment the part I used last night to add and rotate text (never done that before). I also remember a few months ago a great-looking program that can crop odd shapes (such as a flower) which would be good for 7-sided or scalloped coins, for example. Will see if I can find that as well.  :)
Yes, found it - looks impressive, though so far not used it or needed to ...

I recreate today what I used last night - hopefully all can be explained with the one screenshot. Open the PhotoScape program and click on Editor. On the top left pane select on your computer where the image you wish to work on is located; it will be shown large on the right-hand pane. Then of the four tabs Home/Object/Crop/Tools go to Object and select the letter T icon for adding text. The box called Text appears over the other panes, while the desired text details are being selected; I show the capital letter I selected, in red colour, in Tahoma font, and many other parts I did not use. On top of the large image is a box with dotted border in which the letter is shown; and above is a two-way arrow which is for rotating the letter to any degree, and the box itself can be dragged anywhere over the image.
All sounds a bit complicated but it is easy!

The jeton, by the way, does sometimes have normal words and sometimes nonsense lettering - so may not be decipherable. Still would be nice to find an example with same lettering recorded somewhere, if only to see what the unknown letters are.  :)
