German States - 1/24 Thaler of Brandenburg?

5 posts

Here I am humbly requesting your help to identify this coin.

His actual diameter is + / - 19,3 mm and subtitles that I can see are:

Obverse: G(E?)WIMAR (3?) (S?)( ?)RIEL

Reverse:. (M?)ONE . NOVA . DVC . PRVS .

The closest to this coin I was able to find on "World Coins" is "Brandenburg/GERMAN STATES KM# 515", which they say that is a "DREIPOLCHER (= 3 Baltic Schilling)" 1684, minted in Berlin, and also say that it is coinage for Province of Prussia. However, as the date of my coin is not visible and they don´t have a picture from this coin in "World Coins", I'm kinda lost.

As I am just a curious guy in coins from German States, and I'm sure there are experts here on coins of this kind, I thank each and every contribution to the classification of this coin.

Thank you very much for your tip easy.dog, but the subtitles of my coin are slightly different from the picture that illustrates the coin you have indicated me. The coins have the following subtitles:

My obverse: GE WI MAR |3| ?? S RIEL
Numista obverse: GE . WI . MA |3| BR . S . R . I . E .

My reverse: . MONE . NOVA . DVC . PRVS .
Numista reverse: MONE . NO . DVC . PRVS .

Can it be because the year of mintage? The coin from the Numista's photo is the 1626 and the year of my coin is not readable. Does the diference in legends could make we know the year of mintage?

8)    It is on there though. The date is 1620-something.
As in the 16 is implied (by the mint), and the coins just had the last two numbers of the year (so a 1625 year would be shown as just 25, for example - actually  2  5  divided); above the circle with 1/24 in, the 2 is top left of that. Cannot read the number on top right - maybe a 3 perhaps?

EDIT: Now also found this ...
http://teatrnn.pl/leksykon/node/4252/the_coin_of_george_william_hohenzollern_elector_of_brandenburg_and_duke_of_prussia

Legend framing: GE WI SRI EL MAR BR
Meaning: George William Margrave of Brandenburg Elector of the Holy Roman Empire.

The inscription around the edge: MONE NOVA DVC PRVS
Meaning: coin new Duchy of Prussia.

I know that first inscription is not in the same order as yours (GE WI MAR BR SRI EL),
but it shows what it means at least.
The SRI means Holy Roman Empire because in Latin it stands for Sacro Romano Impero.
And that page has lots of other information, and that it is a 3 number - 'Here (in the ring) number 3 representing the value of the coin - 3 Grossus'. As well as being 1/24 Thaler. Mathematically then, there were 72 Grossus in 1 Thaler. So I guess it is a little like in UK that the old half-crown coin (two shillings and sixpence or 2s6d or 2/6) was one eighth (1/8) of a pound. Or a halfpenny (1/2d) coin was 1/480 of a pound. And so on. :)
