Quote: Lotus07Here's a picture of me :)That is a really cool-looking car. I'd love to see that one in like-new condition painted some kind of awesome color... *starts drooling*
I'm standing right next to my dream car! It's a Trabant 601 from Eastern Germany. This particular one was for sale, I only couldn't afford it!
Quote: nalaberongWasn't the Trabi terrible? Does it have lots of retro appeal to compensate?Yup, the technology was very old-fashioned. It couldn't compare to the Western cars from that time, but the East-Germans usually didn't know better, so they were okay with it. I just love it, manly because of interest for the country it was produced in and I like the way it looks!
Quote: bam777Himmel Blau ...Good bye Lenin!Haha, you're right! I still need to see that movie one day!
Quote: nalaberongWasn't the Trabi terrible? Does it have lots of retro appeal to compensate?Trabi is the most trustworthy animal you could get in the 1970s-1990s. I have been driving a bunch of them from Budapest to Wien and brought in "don't-ask-me-what", which made the capital of my first venture.
Quote: imrehHaha, thanks for sharing this. Is it easy to find used Trabants in Hungary? I believe many were exported to the other countries that were behind the Iron Curtain.Quote: nalaberongWasn't the Trabi terrible? Good old Trabant is the thing which took you just about anywhere without any major costs. Plus, since it had very thin tyres, you could take over BMWs in the Alps in the winter.
Not to mention the fact, that even with an economic and linguistic degree I could fix any Trabi problems. It is a pity I don't have any anymore, but my son, would love to grab one!
It is going to cost him: EUR200 (empty tank); EUR300 (filled up tank)

The price really is 200-400 euros. (empty tank!
Quote: imrehHaha, that's funny. Maybe I'll find one in former Eastern Germany, since many Trabis were dumped there after Die Wende.Quote: Lotus07Haha, thanks for sharing this. Plus you shall bring the oil with you all times as it runs on "mixture" which is petrol (85%) + oil (15%) and as no more petrol stations serve that you have to prepare the "Cuvee" for your Trabi... but having said that it goes on anything, including used olive oil... or burned butter...
Quote: imrehSwap a Trabi for some rare Dutch coins? - I am game!Haha, sure. Unfortunately I haven't got many 'rare' Dutch coins!
Quote: imrehYes, Efes it is. Great place to visit.Quote: DutchgalegoEfes?

Quote: "BluHawk"Interesting chat here. Enjoyed the banter and photosMe too! And about halfway through I realised it was from 2014....
Quote: "imreh"The other problem with Trabi was that it was frequently eaten by animals as the chassis was made of compressed paper:About 10 years ago I was driving down one of the main roads in Cape Town, South Africa, and I saw a brightly painted car heading in the opposite direction and thought, "My word! That is a Trabant!" I got home and Googled "Trabant South Africa" and discovered these guys who had driven it all the way through Africa!
:D

I will never forget that day. The cars can't be too bad if they can make a journey like that and look as good as this one did.
Quote: "pnightingale"My wife and I have raised six fine strong sons between us plus my one beautiful daughter. That's great! Intelligent people should multiply and improve humankind! With only 3 sons and 2 daughters I'm lagging behind you. But, being just 68 yrs young, there's still time to catch up 😂
