OK, this has likely been mentioned before, but I have a couple map improvements.

- Select how many "degrees" of colour I want for completeness: It is not so hard to generate a fine gradient, correct? I have over 100 coins from the UK (thanks to a few visits and many junk bins), and under 10 from many/most other countries. This means that most of my map is shaded in one or two colours... I would like a subtle difference, so is it possible to make a customizable number of different completeness colours?
- A map "era" - maybe difficult to do too far back, but I have no coins from Kazakhstan. However, I do have coins from the USSR. So Kazakhstan is filled in on my map, giving me a false sense of superiority. My plan: include a toggle-able function that makes all coins from defunct nations not appear on the map.
In the country lists I would also be able how much I have completed of the country. Like "Czechoslovakia 166 coins [83/166 - 50%].

We also need to update the Dashboard. I mean, at least we should add South Sudan right? Then might not produce coins yet, but I think they have some tokens of some kind. I would also like to be able to see the dashboard with "modern countries", which means that the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia isn't included. That makes it easier to see which countries I don't have, (e.g. Kazakhstan is colourised even if I don't have any coins form there, just from Soviet Union). It would also be nice to be able to disable some "countries" from the dashboard, like USSR, Central- and West African States etc.

I also reckon that the Euro should be in its own category. Then you could have a list like in States and Province lists.

That's right. The first post in this topic is only 2 months old.  :.

Voila, that's a great idea.

Then, I'd suggest another useful improvement: the possibility of grouping nations in wish list criterions.

For example, if I'm interested only in African coins, I have to specify a single search criterion for each single country: why not grouping them by continent, or having the possibility to check the ones I'm interested in in order to have a single criterion and not "duplicates" for any different country?
I was thinking a lot about this, and finally I'm ready to make my suggestion:

Many collectors decide their limits for their collections:
- Some collect certain countries, regions and/or years,
- Some collect just by type (KM# or simmilar), no matter which years or variations have the coin,
- Others collect 1st year of mintage only,
- And others (like me) collect also variants of the coins.

Now the problem is when a collector find a coin which is listed to have variants. If the variants are from different years, then there is no problem; depending on the year will be the variant.

Also some variants are too obvious, like differences on spelling or with or without certain details (with or without mintmark, engraver name, etc.).

But sometimes we find variants are subtle and/or hard to find on the same year: not always is easy to decide if a date is "narrow" or "wide", or typography is "bold" or "normal", if you haven't both variants to compare... and how you decide to ask for or buy a certain variant if you don't have idea of what you already have? (I got same coin several times, cause of not be able to determine what I already had).

Now my suggestion is to have the chance to add pics for variants of coins; may be the complete coin, or just a part of the picture showing the detail that makes the variant. For sure I don't know how the site is programmed, but I guess same as can be added years to list, could be added pics whenever needed.

As example of what I'm suggesting, please see our local numismatic site http://monedasuruguay.com/var/092.htm and http://monedasuruguay.com/var/054.htm, I don't say to copy their structure, but is a sample of how they show the relevant details.

I have better idea. On the coin page, someone should create a special column for pictures of variants or for explaining something. For example: https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces2490.html
For this coin, I added a picture where variant is explained (year with and without dot). Also, now I can't add a picture for edge if I want to add. Also I wrote all the comments about the coin in "edge" section. It would be better if I put those comments in special section. It could also be for variants (usually it will be for variants) but You could also put there special comments.
Please, tell me what do You think.

Great Kuna, you got the idea, and I agree, I think this could be 4 sections now, Obverse, Reverse and Edge, the current secions, and adding one more for variants, notes, etc. Anyway, I think would be good to have the chance to add more than 1 pic in this new section, cause some of the coins have several variants, specially on the countries where they use the same coin for several years, but they may have variations from one to other year, and also on the same year. I would say is better to limit to put pics for the variations where description is not enough; like a coin I seen from Chile where they have wide, medium and narrow date, and also narrow and wide rim. Also it has variants having name of the engraver or no name, but there is no need to show it with pics; name is present or not; no confusion possible; but my point is how you determine which date is wide, which is narrow, and which is medium, if you don't have something to compare with?

So we agree on the idea, and now will be programmer's problem to determine how to do it  :D

Thank you for your comments and addition to my idea, would like more jump in if they have something more to add.

I think the forum should have a limit of perhaps 25 posts per page, and posts after this automatically go on the next page.  It can take quite some time to load topics with 400+ posts with lots of pictures.
Firstly, thank you, Daniel, for reviving this hopelessly dead post! - I hope it will be a great resource for someone who is empowered by Xavier to manage this site ... on a wonderful day!

What bothers me recently is that I have switched on the  "I don't want to swap" option after I have moved to the Emirates, and I have received over a dozen of swap requests since...
It is uncomfortable for me, but I guess, my answers of "No, I cannot swap, sorry" are straightforwardingly annoying to those people, who have invested time to browse through my swaplist.
So, I guess more strict warning system is needed, if you want to start a swap with someone who does not want to swap!
hi
i wrote my ideas in other post few days ago, but i think that this thread would be better, so i re-write my ideas here:

- a new column for the page start a swap called "last exchange", this column might be updated when both users click on  "confirm your swap offer" during the swap...

- in start a swap, a warning sign or something like it when an user doesn't login here after 1 month (like the  :Zz:)

- in the settings, a new option called "favourite exchange countries", structured as the current "languages" (yes! with flags and the check-boxes), where an user can specify in which countries he prefers to find the swap-partners (this is also because, for example, there are users that prefer swap only in Europe and not all over the world, so a thing like it will show only the users that want to swap with us)

- in the coins to exchange page, a new line  that show the date of last swaplist's update

I think that these things might help us to find good swap partners easily.
I don't know if I'm the only one using a Mac here, but there should be an alternative to Excel documents when you want to download your collect/swap list. I can't open an Excel in Mac, so there should be an alternative with for Mac users to download them in Numbers. Or am I the only one with this issue?

Another Mac user here….

You should be able to open an Excel file with Numbers, part of iWork …  There is also Microsoft Office for Mac that has Excel in it ...

Thanks, derf,
You should elaborate more on your "format" views, which I personally find very very useful!

It seems like the documents are too old, because what I get is:

Import Error
This document was created with an unsupported version of Excel. Only documents created with Excel ’97 or later can be opened.

Hi Daniel,

We have moved a good step forward with the new "comment" field.
Most of the description of variants will go there. I hope Xavier will allow to put a pic in that field, so when needed it will help.
Lots of work already to update the sheets, in english and french  :)  !

Cheers,
André

Like it was mentioned above... you can install Microsoft office without any problem in your Mac. I do have it and it's perfectly fine.

Thanks XAVIER for implementing some of this,

still much to go according to your own commitment!

Wish everyone a lovely Semana Santa!

Cheers,

Quote: "Xavier"Here are the ideas I have added to my TODO list:
  • Alternative Catalog Numbers
  • Links between coin pages
  • Improved dashboard (various and funny stats)
  • More pictures per page to show variations
  • Type a country's name and have it shown where it is on the map
  • Improved Excel export (not a priority for me though)
  • 24 hours cool down
  • Rating of a swap displayed on the swap page
  • Specify you are not interested in the other years/variations of coin, so that it shows like you already have all the years/variations.
  • More features included in the mobile version
  • Hashtags for coins
  • External links on coin pages (Wikipedia, forum discussions, etc)
  • Number of potential exchangeable coins shown also on the profile
Only 2.5 years after I wrote this message, I'm surprised by how many of those items have been done. I'm confident I can finish the rest within the next 2.5 years.
