I can't get the roll...
There is no such thing as an unsearched wheat roll.

A better investment for the long term would be a good reference book, even an old red book if you are going for a US collection, a book on coin grading and evaluation, and if there is any money left over the finest coin book ever produced, English Silver Coinage from 1649. Even if you don't care for English coins it is full of useful information and I'll pretty much guarantee that having read it you will want to start collecting them.

You can pick up old Seaby Standards from the 1960's and 1970's for a few dollars, it was an early edition which sparked my interest in numismatics almost 50 years ago.

There is a long standing numismatic expression, "Buy the book before the coin". What this means is that young or new collectors, quite understandably, want to start adding some nice looking coins to their collection. There is a whole wolf pack out there just waiting for you. Until you have sufficient knowledge to identify a fake coin or one which has been doctored, you should stick to the rummage bins and bulk lots. I still get most of my coins this way, you would be amazed at what you can pick up for 10 cents.

You will also get to handle a lot of coins which will give you a better idea of what you should be looking for, once you are ready to step into the eBay shark tank.
Non illegitimis carborundum est.  Excellent advice for all coins.
Make Numismatics Great Again!
Yes phil is right. Get a cd with a lot of them on it. Tony sent me one with 16 different coin books on it and I just love it.
