Just came from the bank with 500 Swiss francs (544 USD) worth of 10 and 20 cent pieces (and one roll of 5 francs). I might have taken this hobby a bit too seriously.
Anyhow, if you are looking for dates I can look out for them. I will be selling them at 75% book value or putting them up for swap.
I've looked an earlier lot, the oldest one I found is 1939 the newest being 2012. Let's see what will be here.

So out of many many rolls (totaling 375 CHF), I found these interesting pre 1960 coins.
20 rappen (cent) 2x1944, 45, 2x 52, 53, 2x 55, 58, 2x59
10 rappen (cent) 1x1939, 44, 2x47, 2x50, 53,2x55,57, 2x59
out of 125 CHF in 5 fracs:
5 Francs: No silver, face value dates, 3 good looking 2012's.
And many many, 1960's, 70's, 80's, 90's, 2000's and some 2010's.

I'm not really sure how you get the rolls to hunt ? The best I do is go to the bank and ask for £10 worth of whatever and get em in a coin bag. Recently I've been doing this with £2 coins lol
I simply go to the bank with banknotes and get the rolls. Today I walked in with 500 Francs and asked for 30 rolls of 20 cents, 10 rolls of 10 cents, 1 roll of 1/2 francs, and 1 roll of 5 francs. Sure they look at you as if you have a mental condition, but you simply smile and walk away.
But there is a very good reason why I don't normally buy any other rolls than 10 and 20 cents. The only reason why I get the 5 francs was because someone wanted me to hunt for them (they needed 2000-present). Also, the 1/2 francs are great for parking.
I found out that Switzerland uses machines to take out the silver coins (pre 1968 1/2, 1, 2, 5 francs) so it's wasted time to look for them. And the 5 cent (rappen) pieces have a similar problem as anything pre 1982 are no longer legal tender.
The 10 and 20 still have had the same weight since the 1930's so you can find 70+ year old coins.
To return them I simply walk in with the coins and make sure I don't put in more 99.90 CHF (to avoid bank fees). So now it's several trips to the bank, unless someone wants a bunch of 1960-2011 (I'll sell those at face with shipping).
If you want me to look for more I'll be walking back with 3,000 Swiss francs (2,440 EURO, my college fund) for more, I've got nothing to lose. They are still the same amount of money, just in a much heavier form.
Imagine how much just of these will yield. 1,000 CHF will bring 200 rolls of 10 rappen. That's a whopping 10,000 coins.
So I'll probably go for 10,000 20 rappen coins and 10,000 10 rappen. All depends how bored I'll be this summer.
Any objections?

Bugger, I'm going to Switzerland in about 6 weeks, but as I hear this, I won't find any silver coins or pre-1982 5 rappen coins. And I still need a hell of a lot of them!
Luckily, I bring my metal detector to Switzerland as well, maybe I find some silver in some Swiss parks? Who knows...

I have my Garrett Ace 250 I brought from Florida, I've been hunting around the canton of Zug. Only found a 10 rappen from 1962 and a lot of trash. And be careful, in Switzerland it's against the law to dig up antiques, even if there is no personal law on metal detecting.
Ever since I was looking for older dates (when I was like 5) I haven't seen one single silver coin in circulation, the only place I found silver was in these Walmart CoinStar-style machines at the UBS; they spit out the silver when you bring in bags of change. I was lucky enough to get to them before the bank tellers collected them!
And btw, I have a TON of silver 5 francs from the 1920's until 1967 (including 1969 the last minted, while 1968 was copper).
As for 5 old 5 rappen, my family hoarded them, along with silver coins before the machines came into use in the 1970's, got also 2 1945''s that are listed as rare on Numista.

Lucky you! Fancy to swap any of those 5 rappen coins?

Well, I'd rather have 100 euro notes than 100 CHF but they are still worth a lot of coins. XD

Those notes look definitely a lot better than the euronotes!
And yes sure! But ironically all of mine are in NL rather than here!

If you want, I was thinking of trying out a Skype-based roll opening system. You reserve a roll and I'll open it live for you. Any coins you like you can pay 75% of the book value.

Glad to see I am not the only obsessive roll hunter here! I am in the US, usually search cent and nickel rolls. I have found a couple of Indian head cents, and have almost completed a Jefferson nickel collection- only 3 more to find. Yes, I did find the 1950 D in circulation- twice! We still have some silver to be found on our side of the pond- I often come across war nickels, and have found some silver quarters as well.
Yeah, every year in Florida I coin roll hunt. Mostly nickels and pennies just like you. Found a 1943 D over horizontal D
I take out all the copper pennies 1982 and prior.

Every couple months I order 500$ in half dollars from the bank then hunt through the rolls. I've gotten quite a few 1964-1969 halves as well 2003- ( low mintage) plus assorted proofs including silver proofs and one copper nickel commemorative. All in all it's been quite fun!
Quote: rhinoDo you buy by the box or just get some rolls?
I've never bought a box before, since I don't have an American bank account (well I do but it will be open to me in a few months when I turn 18). I can't order those 500 dollar boxes, could have my grandma buy them for me but I typically end up buying silver gold and electrics (apple computers, ipad's etc) so I end up using every penny I earn from my coinsnnotes business.
I now have 3000 CHF I put aside for my university studies, but I first plan to make some money from money by buying all those rolls. :P

I've never gotten a box before, only a few rolls. I never found silver in the few half rolls that I looked through (I'm not surprised though as you need to look through many). I typically buy all my silver American coins from flea markets, garage sales, and sometimes pawnshops if there is profit to be made / something to add to my collection.
Either way, I'm hunting for pre 1960 dates in those 10 and 20 rappen coins. It will be fun going to the bank with those bills and asking for 10 and 20 cent pieces. I might need to hire a transport truck.

Just came back from a new bank in Zug. 10 rolls of 20 rappen and 14 10 rappen rolls (one I opened already in the car... I was bored).

Nothing, I pay face value
I only have to be careful not to put too much in the coin counter at once, more that 99.90 and bam, 10 francs for nothing gone.

Can't you just walk in the bank and ask for the coins, or don't they accept that?

What do you mean? They have special coin counters, it's free if you put under 100 francs in it. Otherwise they make you pay 10 francs and 2% of the total value. I learned that the hard way when I brought in nearly 200 francs worth of 10 and 20 cents today, but I kind of knew this but laziness and knowing that I'd make money on the coins I just let the 10 fly away.

I go to the bank every week and get myself 10 rolls of 10 Rappen coins.
I usually find around 10 coins worth keeping (everything until 1959).
That's why I have sooooo many coins in my collection (And I've only counted through a third of the entire collection XD )
The best thing about collecting is finding the coins, but not if you have to buy them.
To tell you the truth, I would be very unhappy doing coinroll hunting in Switzerland. But that's because I collect only by type.
I go every Friday to my bank in the office building and take $190 worth of coins....2 rolls of twoonies and loonies each and 4 rolls of quarters. No point in taking rolls of dimes or nickels because there are only a couple of commemoratives I'd find there. I usually find atleast a couple of commemoratives in each rolls (though quarters usually yield a lot more), and often US quarters too. I've only once come across a silver canadian quarter, but I hear it is still possible.
There isn't any fee on getting rolls and I can do it with any bank branch so long as I have an account with the bank. The only thing is that I have to roll up the coins again to deposit them. Doing it since the beginning of this year, I have become a pro at getting the coins out of the rolls and then refilling them without tearing the paper. TD bank has coin counting & collection machines in some if not all of their branches, but I wonder if they charge a fee for using it.
In anycase, I've completely built out my canadian swap list from coin roll hunting and its a nice little activity to do on a saturday morning
Not much use roll hunting in New Zealand, for one thing, our coins don't come in rolls. They come in plastic bags. Secondly, our coins all changed size recently. So the earliest you're going to find is 2006.
Similar in the UK.
No rolls, just bags.
And no silver either.
So the only thing to hunt for is commemorative 50p, £1, and £2.
But it's increasingly difficult to not only find a bank that's not been turned into a pub or a shop, or a post office that's actually still open, but one that will actually exchange a bag of coins. Last time I went to a bank (think it was about a year ago) and asked for a bag of £2's they looked at me rather strangely and said we don't exchange coins!

I've never heard of Martins Bank, but this is very interesting reading https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martins_Bank
Especially considering it was the first bank in the North of England to have a cash machine, in 1967!
