U.S. 1 cent - 1988 D

I was going through the extra coins I have, and noticed something on the 1988 D.  One of the ten I had in the jar, the "D" appears to be farther away from the date.  I looked at the rest of them and some actually have the "D" centered between the 9 and 8, and some are more centered under just the 8 number.  I am fairly new to collecting coins and am not sure if this would be considered a variation and should have it's own KM, or extra note after it, or if this is a very common thing with almost any year.  Anyone know?  Thanks!
I believe mint marks were still hand punched then so it should be normal.
