Melting

Does anyone know how to melt coins?  A DIY melter would be wonderful.

what the hell do you want to do that for?
I can tell you but you must tell me why?
Taking a break from swapping for a while, but still interested in pre 1799 Spanish coins, I will make time for that!

I really put this in the wrong section it should be under free discussion but I want to make aluminum rounds of coins.  I think it would be pretty cool to have aluminum rounds of my favorite coins.  Or even just make my own aluminum ingots.

oh, you don't want to melt coins, you want to cast new ones.

not so easy, here is a group that casts for fun http://www.flickr.com/groups/hobby_foundry/

you would do better with 3d printing, you can design anything and print in metal, http://www.shapeways.com/

I made some aluminum ingots last night in my incredible grill furnace (an old grill I decided to convert).  It was so cool.

Yes, there is something magical about getting metal hot and then working with it.

You can use a hairdryer for a blower and get some fire bricks.

to make a mold you can carve wax and then do a lost wax casting, let me know if you need more info

All it takes is a propane blowtorch and a small cast iron pot. Put the object to be melted in the pot and then hit with torch flame ... beside collecting coins I make rings also.
