Coin grading vs coin patina / luster

2 posts • viewed 131 times

Hi all,

I am a new collector and am hoping for a bit of opinion / advice regarding how to grade coins here on Numista for swap. Having started my research, and having read a few posts on this forum, it appears to me that the subject can be open to much debate…

What I am hoping for is a few opinions on the range of coins in the pictures below.

From what I understand, grading is about the wear on or damage to the coin, and not necesarrily the patina that may have formed on them.

  • From my very unskilled eye, all these coins appear to be in a similar state of wear / damage, and I would venture to rate that state XF or AU.
  • They are however in an extremely broad range of patina / luster… Could, or should this affect the grading?

The background to these is that I aquired a 2kg bulk batch of various Dutch gulders, all in various conditions. I want to put some of them up for swap (I know that that they are very common) without mis-representing their condition, and also learn a bit from the exercise.
