I have a Sarawak one cent which I can't find in any catalog (4 online or printed Krause). The obverse differs from the listed coins, having leaves around the portrait instead of lettering. Can anybody help me figure out what this is? I bought this at a coin show a few months ago and didn't notice the different obverse.

It will not be in any catalogue.  It has been altered.

 Also welcome to the forum.

Someone, with some skill, has used an engraving tool and been busy

making wavy lines in all directions, all around the portrait. That also

then includes the C BROOKE RAJAH lettering being obliterated.

Lastly, the same tool then engraves the wreathes each side -

which is why they are sunk in, whilst those on the reverse are raised.

 Presumably.

I have some time this evening, so will have a go at pictures of

the four stages used. Original / Cleared / Lines / Wreath >

That is as far as I have got at the moment - doing this with pictures whereas

the engraver did it with tools on the coin. Next, add wavy lines. Lastly, wreath.

It looks like the wreaths are raised rather than incuse, needs the OP to confirm

Pictures 3 and 4 - assuming that is how it was done, on the actual coin.

Either that or the other way round - leaves then lines.

Also, on the untouched reverse, all parts including leaves,

are an even colour. Whereas the obverse has traces of bronze

showing through where the engraving tool went.

Very precise post engraving anyway.

Leaves seem to be in positive relief but under background level.

Thank you for all the replies, they were educational. I thought of an altered coin after posting this, and looking at the coin, the leaves are all below the background level of the coin. So it's been altered, a rather good job of it. So I now have an altered coin in my collection.

I learned something new and something to watch out for.
