Greek fractional silver to ID

Hello all —

Here is another Greek fractional silver which needs to be identified:

According to the seller's description: 0.12g 6.1mm. The obverse looks like a helmeted or crowned head, but I'm not even sure it's in the right orientation. The reverse shows a helmeted figure, maybe Athena wearing a Corinthian helmet.

Definitely a tetartemorion.

Looked for tetartemorions at CGB, the overall design in your coin looks compatible with the one from Lampsakos, Mysia. Look two for example: https://www.cgbfr.com/mysie-lampsaque-tetartemorion-ttb-ttb,bgr_881111,a.html and https://www.cgbfr.com/mysie-lampsaque-tetartemorion-ttb,bgr_680360,a.html

Buuut, in yours the helmeted figure at reverse is facing right, while in the specimens there the figure is facing left like the obverse figure.

Thanks very much, Giobruno.

I've found this reddit thread with a number of the Athena-facing-right reverse. I don't know whether my Apollo obverse is similar enough to those coins to be considered the same. Mine is, of course, poorly preserved, but if it's the same basic type, it seems to be quite rare. The Athena-facing-right reverse is much more scarce than the left facing.

That's it!!

The Apollo side at the reddit photo is compatible with the Apollos on the specimens at CGB, and look that they have 10 of this type available, so we have a reasonable sample size. But all 10 have Athena facing left.

If a right-facing Athena is really that rare, congrats for getting a really uncommon coin.

The one I own have a griffin head at the obverse. The photo on Numista shows it facing left, but both orientations are common (and CGB have more right-facing ones available than left-facing ones).

I've looked at the Lampsakos page here and (of course) we don't have this coin at our catalog.

One last thing, since we browsed the Ancient Coins reddit (I look there sometimes): as they say when someone acquires or showcases one of these, welcome to the fractional club.

Thx Giobruno. I'm now a member of the “Fractional Club” with six such coins.

They're all from the same eBay seller in the past five to six weeks. He hasn't added any new one to his latest weekly auction and none either for next week's auction, so it may be that he's exhausted his supply.
