Pala Empire vs. Tomara dynasty coinage

1 post • viewed 27 times

I think that a couple of coins that are listed under the Pala Empire should be moved to the Tomara dynasty.

These jitals under the Palas are looking very similar than the ones that are already under the Tomaras. One of the source of the confusion may be that there is a 'pala' in the name of almost all of the Tomara rulers: http://www.chiefacoins.com/Database/Countries/Tomara.htm

Also there are multiple rulers with the same name. There is a 10-11th century Mahipala, from the Pala empire (

(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mahipala) and an 12th century Mahipala from the Tomara dinasty (http://www.chiefacoins.com/Database/Countries/Tomara.htm).

I've searched into a little bit into the Mahipala jitals, and Numista the only source that list these under the Palas. What I've found is that everywhere else it is listed as Tomaras/Rajputs or at least from Central India.

Zeno's lists them either at the Tomaras: https://www.zeno.ru/showphoto.php?photo=312784 (and https://www.zeno.ru/search.php?searchid=241718) or as ‘minor dynasties’ of Northern India: https://www.zeno.ru/showphoto.php?photo=152231

I'm not terribly familiar with the early medieval Indian coinage, so I don't want to open modification request to move these coins to the Tomaras before asking for second opinions.
